Contest Week 64: Youkai closed for judging
Halloween is going to come while this contest is running, so I thought we could try a theme of monsters but with one extra detail. Youkai (or y?kai, depending how you like to spell it) are basically the monsters of Japanese folklore and legends. There's a rich history of stories about youkai and a huge range of them; supposedly 11,520 types. Your goal these next two weeks is to illustrate a youkai, any youkai you can find in the links I'll give below or anywhere else for that matter, as long as it comes from traditional Japanese folklore. For people here that are familiar with anime and manga, the term "youkai" is often mistranslated as "demon" when put into English. So if you're a fan of something like Inu Yasha or Naruto, all of the "demons" in those shows are actually youkai. Wikipedia's page on Youkai is a good starting point. The Obakemono Project has a huge list of youkai with pictures if you're looking for some of the less common youkai. Here's some of the more common ones that some people here may already know of- Tengu (bird-like goblins) Kitsune (multi-tailed foxes) Bakeneko (two-tailed cats) Kappa (river sprites) Oni (kind of like ogres) Tanuki (raccoon dogs) Tsukumogami (artifact spirits) The rules this time are: -It must be a drawing of a youkai from traditional Japanese folklore. -Write the name of it somewhere in the description or title so I can look it up if I haven't heard of that one before. -Contest Week 64 will be open for entries for roughly 2 weeks starting from now until Saturday, November 10, at 11:59am PST. That's middle of the day on Saturday for people in the US. CLICK HERE FOR WEEK 63 WINNERS *1st Prize:* You may choose a T-shirt from Oddica's website. Hey I just realized we did a daylight savings thing in the US recently and I think we went backwards one hour. For other countries that don't change your clocks twice a year like we do, this means the deadline is actually one hour later (I think). So the deadline is still 11:59am PST today, and that'll be slightly over 2 hours from now because of our time change.
So hurry up you people that haven't finished *pokes* ---- In just a few weeks I'm going to be moving~ I'll be turning off my internet connection in the next couple of weeks and I might not be around for a little while. So if I mysteriously vanish or don't answer a memo, that would be why. I'll still be here until the end of this contest though, but it looks like the next two will be done by Sweetcell. I should be back around before that second one is over. |
