If you read the description, it took him 3 hours to paint it and he recorded the animation (don't ask me how, i don't know) and sped it up to make a 5 minute video.

I thought he'd sped it up to make it quicker, like watching animation on Shi. The way you were talking I thought he was trying to pass himself off as a speed painter. Well that was amazing, he's a good artist but I'm with froot, someone needs to tell these people to come over here and see the amazing skills of 2draw.

Top notch work for sure. I don't understand why there are so many comments though. Plenty of artists out there who can do that.

That portrait was of average quality at best, it's not all that realistic and doesn't appear to be a true speed painting. In fact, that portrait looks overdone because the artist labored too much on details in the early stages of the painting.

I looked at other "speed painting" videos by the same artist and I've concluded he doest actually know what speed painting is. As I've come to understand it, the idea behind speed painting is to capture the essence of your subject, using very few detail strokes, all completed within a limited amount of time. Some artists spend up to 4 hours on a speed painting, it depends on the complexity of what is being painted for it to qualify and this varies from artist to artist. That been said, 3 hours is plenty of time for most intermediate digital painters to advance beyond the speed painting stage of a simple portrait, or in this case, too over do a painting. If he had been painting something much more elaborate with in 3 hours, like a futuristic landscape or something more structurally complex, it might fall under the speed painting category. Of course, I've seen good speed painting portraits that took up to 4 hours or more to complete but they're usually very stylish, dynamic and still poses that loose, conceptual look that is the hallmark of speed painting.

Simply said, this video doesn't impress me, especially given the label of "speed painting". If you want to see impressive speed paintings, Axil's last few paintings would better fit that description. Look through Axil62's gallery on 2Draw, some of his paintings capture the essence of shape, color and form with very few strokes, which are characteristics of real speed paintings. In some of Axil's paintings, you can actually see the faster paced strokes, demonstrating his effort to quickly capture his subjects form, it's really cool.

we can only assume he means speed painting because he has sped up a video of him painting.

Is there a way to colour like he does.. i mean do the image and contours in black&white then add a filter? i've never tried to do that, makes it look quite easy though

frootcake: Either way, that video and portrait wasn't all that impressive. Many artists on 2Draw impress me way more than that did. :D

As far as the coloring goes, in Photoshop you can do monotone or duotone color modes to change black and white images but first you have to make the image in grayscale. You can also do that with the colorization option under Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation on the menu bar.

you can do it in lascaux as well with the color or hue blending mode (either on a separate layer, or using the brush blending mode).

Insightful critique, Klox.. Now I should go watch some of Mr. Dan's animations. =]

Funny Klox, when you were mentioning true speed painters Dan came leaping straight to my frontal lobe. Hmmmm, maybe someone should try to video capture some of his oekaki paintings and put them up on Youtube. Then again we don't want Dan to get a big head..... too late? ;)

Didn't know you could could do that in Lascaux. Nother new trick I can play with. Learn something new everyday.
