Wow! I was overwhelmed and impressed with all the great submissions. Only one entry can win (and its pretty subjective), but they all were very good and I was impressed with almost all of them. Hopefully everyone who entered had fun creating their creatures, and thank you so much for entering. Every week there will be a new contest to enter, so if one doesnt pique your interest, maybe the next one will.

Week 2: Chemistry

You knew that you weren't supposed to go there, but Julie always got you to do things you knew you shouldn't do. As you made your way towards the wooden shack you noticed a silver, glimmering light radiating from the small exhaust pipe that seemed to have come from inside.

The Molvileus House, now reduced to this wooden shack, had been rumored to have housed terrible things and terrible magic. The Molvileus family corpses were buried in a small roadside cemetary, and the line had died out years before either you are Julie had been born. However, the scary inhabitants of this family made such an impression that old timers still talked about it, and the legends grew from generation to generation. The rumor was that the Molvileus warlocks would cause their victims to fall into a deep trance from which they would be tortured endlessly. Julie had come to write an article about the house for the school newspaper and enticed you to bring your camera.

As you got closer to the house you began to sense your nerves and heart more perceptibly. Your eyes were wider and your hands were shaky. You were almost too scared to continue, but the same feelings that held you back pushed you forward, and unspent adrenaline pulsed through your arms and legs. Even though there were few outward signs that the building was inhabited, the feeling was palpitable, and you KNEW. But courage overtook your misgivings, and you opened the door. Instantly a flash of light shot into your mind and you awoke at home with a camera in your hands.

It was broken; the lens had cracked. But the film inside seemed untouched. Apparently, you had seen something so firghtening that you held the camera up in front of your face and got one shot off before you fainted. You were almost too scared to develop that picture, but you couldn't help yourself. It turns out, that the Molvileus house is enchanted to show you your re-occuring nightmare! Your photograph was a representation of your dream.

What is your Nightmare?

The Contest: Draw a picture of what you saw when you opened the door (your re-occuring nightmare if you have one). I am very aware that this was a photograph, so drawing a polaroid frame or whatever is not necessary. This picture can be of anything really, but please illustrate what happens in your dream through one photgraphic frame. Describing it in the comments will not effectivley communicate what is going on.

The Rules: We all know that people have different sorts of nightmares. They can be funny to you now, but they had to have been scary to you at one point in your life. If you never had a re-occuring nightmare, you can make one up, but make it scary (i.e. please do not draw something random like cute puff balls attacking and say that it is your nightmare, we are trying to follow a theme here)! Although if you were afraid of dogs, or weird monsters, or in my case the joker from batman, that is all fair game.

Another important rule to this particular contest is that becasue this contest is open to all ages, please do not submit anything that is unappropriate for the 'everyone' setting. Gore, gratuitous amounts of blood, and other very graphic things are too much. You can convey your mood easily without using gore.

This contest will be open from Friday, September 2nd at 11:00pm PST to Friday September 9th at 11:00 pm PST.

*reads it all* I think it'll be harder to fully convey in one image something as complex as that, but it should be an interesting challenge. I used to draw a lot of darker images, so I'm sure I can think of something. *goes to bed*

Question: When do we find out who won the first contest...?

-Also a suggestion, but can we make some of the contests be simpler? Say like having a general theme as opposed to a story? I think certain people like myself work better with a simple generalized theme instead of trying to remember all the elements limiting our work. I'm just suggesting on maybe an alternative basis where you can go back and forth from your story themes, to general. I think that way, you can work more people into the contests as well.

no gore :o

I think you should write a novel out of this XP anyways, I pretty much forgot about the first contest...and I might try this one. It'll be a good challenge for me since I never draw scary looking monsters.

What!!!! The story is the best part.
Dino needs to write a book.

Well, I'll give him that 'the stories are good', but it's not exactly what everyone wants for an art contest theme. Having more than a theme limit can be a turn off to people.

Oh gig, Rosemary won the contest. it is posted on the contest board. Congrats rosemary. :}

Gigandas: just leave It up to Dino. You can't please everyone, but I think most people would be pleased with this contest so far. And the other people will learn to like It.

Gigandas (Sep 3, 2005)
If you think about it, it should probably be easier on him to do a generalized theme certain weeks. It doesn't take as long as coming up with a whole story anyway...

Shanghai (Sep 3, 2005)
actually I keep freaking myself out thinking about different ideas, and especially since I'm home alone right now and I sometimes get anxiety attacks late at night when I'm the only one awake, I probably shouldn't do this one

Ty854 (Sep 3, 2005)
Omg...I hate being the last one awake...

Shanghai (Sep 3, 2005)
I normally go to bed anywhere from 2-6 hours later than other people, and I spend all that time in the basement where my computer and tv are, and going up the stairs in complete darkness (if I turn on a light it'll wake people up) while the steps are creaking and also creaking behind me a few seconds after I've stepped off them (I figure they must be creaking back into place) so that it sounds like I'm being followed is seriously creepy.

Just a little suggestion.. On the spot where you announced the winner, could you make the drawing title a link to the winner's drawing. That way, if we forgot what it looked like we could easily click to see it instead of sifting through all the other entries to find it.

And Congrats Rosemary! :-)

Good suggestion Anna, I just did that for you!

Gigandas: The contest is really as simple as "draw your nightmare," which is in bold. The story is to help set a mood and/or inspire any people that need or want some kind of starting point. If you have good ideas that fit into the rules (which in this case are very open, that will not always be the case, every week it changes) then draw it. If you know me, you know that I am not anal. I would love to see an artist like you join, but everyone is invited to participate if they want to. If its too limiting, I guess just wait for another contest.

Dino: I'm gonna come over there and whip your ass if you don't do something professional with that writing ability of yours. And don't think because I'm a girl I can't do it... I'll bring help if I have to. lol I so enjoy reading what you write, and I'm not easily entertained.
