forumsdrawing discussionBIG Portrait Drawing Collab

I'm getting ready to do a series of portrait paintings in oils but before I do that, I want to practice some coloring comps and techniques on 2Draw. I need someone to draw me a portrait which I can color/paint. I would draw these portraits myself but I figure it will be more beneficial for me if someone else does it, that way it's more challenging and spontaneous. Remember, you're just drawing in this collab, not coloring.

The suject/person in this portrait should have interesting facial characteristics, they can be slightly cartoonish, butt-ugly, whatever, as long as the face isn't super regular and boring like a super model's face. I'm going for a Norman Rockwell or C.F. Payne portrait style, Google those names to see their work.

I would like to collab with someone who has a good grasp of facial anatomy and will put effort into the said collab. Again, remember, you're ONLY drawing the portrait, not coloring it. Really good line work is not a requirement, it's the quality of the head, the face and how dynamic and proportioned the head/face is that matters. Line work is not what's important here, keep that in mind. If you can draw a dynamic, anatomically correct portrait with great line work, that's great but again, good line work is not required.

The size of the drawing will be large, with a height of 550 or more. NOTE: The head should be somewhere within the drawing space, no cropping of the ears or the top of the head. The only cropping should be around the chest or some where near it. The head should be at a 3/4 view or near it, that means no profile or straight on positions. The head can be slightly looking down or up. The head should fill a good portion of the drawing space but don't force it that way, draw natural. The subject can be either sex (female or male).

These portraits will be drawn with the Lascaux applet, no other applets will be used.

Does this sound like something any of you would like to participate in? I would like to do a few of these, respond to this post or memo me if you're interested.

Nightmare: Thanks, I appreciate your interest. I looked over your 2Draw gallery and I'm not sure if your the type of artist I need for this project. You have a genuine artistic talent but your gallery isn't very strong when it comes to facial anatomy or portraits. That been said, if you think you can follow the outline I've posted above and bring your "A game", let's see what you can do. This is a serious collab and I need the best faical/portrait. I'm trying to improve my portrait coloring and comp skills, this is a serious collab, I need serious artists, keep that in mind before you consider joining me.

Alright, I will start the collab, how big do you want the canvas?
  icon
Kloxboy (Jun 17, 2005)
Cool Nightmare! Please follow the outline above, it does give you a general size. Basically, 550 in height or bigger, width is up to you. The outline is key, try to follow it.

Crap, the canvas size on the collab boards only goes up to 500. Shall I post it on the advanced boards?

TAKE NOTE:

Yes Nightmare, as this is very much an "advanced" project. If any one who has sent me a memo for this project or responded to this post, you are going to be part of an ADVANCED project. If you are not ready to put in your best effort into this collab, don't bother collaborating with me. It wastes my time and space on the 2Draw website.

**QUALITY** I'm going to try and paint these portraits at Payne's level of quality:

I love Payne's characters... you can do this no problem, Clox
I'd help ya out, but I've never just drawn something, then colored... I always dive right into the painting

I once wanted to illustrate like Payne. Payne lectures at my old art school now, RSAD.

Cool Poly. Please follow the outline above and take a look at some of the other portraits people are doing with me to get an idea of what you're getting into. I'm looking for the "wow", please bring the "wow", hahaha.

It sounded like fun, so I gave it a shot: http://cellosoft.com/2draw/view/47472/

I may pop one in, that is if you don't mind. I have been a bit lazy lately though. :}

Sincity and Gigge: Sounds good but please follow the outline and as I've said to others, do your best. I just finished Zep's portrait and I found that I may have to color over line work, I didn't for Zep's piece because it was the first piece and Zep is all about the line work. Like it says in the outline, line work is not a factor.

hey Clox, if you want, you can make any changes do you need...erase all the line work if you want ok? :)

safescene (Jun 18, 2005)
Mind if I take a whack at it?
  icon
Kloxboy (Jun 18, 2005)
That would be cool Safescene. I'm trying to improve my coloring with each portrait, it's fun and pretty challenging.

I gave it a try. I could clean up the lines, if you'd like. I wasn't sure if you were going to paint over them. ;-)

Ceido (Jun 19, 2005)
You've got so many now but if you want to do this one then feel free. :)

I found a very funny website: http://www.themonsterengine.com/
An artist paints kiddy drawings in a realistic way. And the results are awesome!
I am sure that if I draw a horrible scribble, Cloxboy will be able to turn it into a masterpiece. >:D

You know, I thought for sure I commented on that site Xod. Wierd for some reason it didn't show up. But just to let you know, that was a very cool site. :}

I'm going to color the rest of the portraits with solids or something close because of computer problems. The multi layer coloring style I was using was giving me problems, for example, I just lost a 3 hour coloring job I did for Kejoco's piece. I considered submitting multiple versions but that will be a real hassle because I'll keep having to ask the Mod's for more space and I put the pieces at risk of getting lost again.

I'll try to make them all look cool with the solids and perhaps some gradients. Either way, this is all about testing color comps and what not, so, I can still reach my original goal for these pieces, which is great.
