marcello (edited Jan 18, 2005)
Ok. I'm posting a new rule.

People who don't make an effort to type, spell, and write properly will start getting their comments deleted. Same goes for image descriptions.

What does this mean? It means actually writing out words in complete, such as "you" and "too." It means learning the difference between "your" and "you're." It means not sounding like a complete moron.

Thank you.

I will try my best.

This rule rules! >:D
|XOD|
  icon
bakuraiscool (Dec 17, 2004)
Wait, does this count for capiltization?
  icon
Northern_shadow (Dec 17, 2004)
And Marcello rules the rules that rules ;o
  icon
marcello (Dec 17, 2004)
I should probably mention that about 90% of the people on this site already follow this rule. We've just had an influx of new users who don't seem to care for the language they speak every day. (Granted, I don't really care that much about English, myself. It is important to write properly so other people can understand you and don't have to get a headache. It's a lot easier to read proper English than otherwise. Plus it's a good habit.)
  icon
bakuraiscool (Dec 17, 2004)
I guess. But you still haven't answered my question, how about capiltization?
  icon
me007 (edited Dec 17, 2004)
True. Grammar helps a lot of times, because other wise, people type comments or complaintes, etc. that dont make sence at all. They try to prove make their opinion heard, when the only message passed on to others is, "What the hell did they just say?" :P
  icon
bakuraiscool (Dec 17, 2004)
"That don't make sense" you mean, right?
(sorry, I'm trying to see if my spelling and grammar skills are good enough...)
  icon
me007 (Dec 17, 2004)
lol I guess I missed that. Yes, "that don't make sence." I am so used to having Microsoft Word do it for me that I forget them. Thank you. And I think that this is a great rule for Marcello to put into effect, it makes things just so much easier to read and understand what people are saying.
  icon
Kenshin (Dec 17, 2004)
Yes.. I am glad you made that a rule.. >_> I hate it when people talk like this: hey u wat r u doin i am at doin nuttin jus sittin hur lik a werd pesn
  icon
Axil62 (edited Dec 17, 2004)
I hate image descriptions. So delete to your hearts content.

Just had a thought, so if the descriptions are crappy, the drawing gets deleted right? So I can go back and find all the crappy pics I hate and give them crappy descriptions and you'll delete them for me? he he
  icon
bakuraiscool (Dec 17, 2004)
HEY! No fair...!
  icon
Hakkai (Dec 17, 2004)
Erm.. What if it's in a joking kind of way? For example, one day I would write " I r teh 1337." ( Like that would ever happen.. )
  icon
bakuraiscool (Dec 17, 2004)
I have no idea what "I r teh 1337." means and I don't plan to find out.
  icon
marcello (Dec 17, 2004)
I should probably mention that common sense applies. So that covers both axil and hakkai's points.
  icon
Axil62 (Dec 17, 2004)
Oh yeah? Well maybe you should wear frilly stuff.
  icon
Anna (Dec 17, 2004)
Roffles. I like this rule. (*pouty face.... lol ;-) )
  icon
Dagan (Dec 17, 2004)
Yeah, good rule. My grammar isn't perfect so , I do need the practice.
  icon
inatyrb (Dec 17, 2004)
Well I believe i have gotten better at my typing. But on occasions i still tend to type too fast and type a really short version for a word. Capitalization on the other hand is something that I lack, and I am trying very hard to do what I am doing now. Well this rule can have its advantages... it will help me understand people when they type funky. Thanks....
  icon
Alex-Cooper (Dec 17, 2004)
About bloody time! Good to see I’m not the only one who gets pissed by idiots too damn lazy to type an extra few letters. Also, any chance of giving severe punishment to people who end all comments in "XD" or any other annoying face type thing? Anyway, this new rule will make one of the few sites I visit on a regular basis much less irritating. Good work Marcello.
  icon
Jack_Fox (Dec 17, 2004)
So if you start typing in a way to make it sound like you're doing an accent or something like that, does that count as a no-no also? For example: "if'n ya got a fokin' problem with wut Iym sayin' yu can go crr(rolling r)am it uup yer arse." Also, I never have a good image description...for any picture...ever...even when hand drawn, so are you gonna be an uptight about that or is your sphincter properly oriented so that whatever I write (just so long as it isn't stupid) will just stay put? Thanks for putting up with my bitching. Peace, Jack

sal (Dec 17, 2004)
lol...
  icon
sincity (Dec 17, 2004)
Well I didn't read all the comments and such, but I'm up for the new rule, because I'm sooooooo tired of trying to read stuff that people type and I'm like...?! WTF! Good one Marcello. All those nights Smokin' the motha load paid off. >;} 'Aave a English ale on me, And if you never had one ....Suffer Byatch, You'll Learn to like it. :}
  icon
emmamommalag (Dec 17, 2004)
I like this new rule. I don't like image descriptions, either. It would be nice if they were optional.
  icon
aznanime93 (Dec 18, 2004)
i like this rule (^_^)
  icon
marcello (Dec 18, 2004)
You can always write, "I've got nothing to say."
  icon
Kloxboy (Dec 18, 2004)
I agree with this rule. You should delete comments that are completely void of spelling, punctuation and grammar, it's a good lesson for people who are lazy. Although, I hope that the mods can tell the difference between a bad comment and one that just has a couple mistakes in it.
  icon
bumpinthenight (Dec 18, 2004)
Thank you, marcello.... This makes me happy... Hopefully none of my comments will be deleted for improper spelling.... XD There are some times when I dont know how to spell certain words :| Ooh... Question.... What if the majority of the words are spelled right and the grammar is mostly correct, but if capitalization and " ' " is not used? I tend to use "dont" as opposed to "don't"... XD
  icon
Kilala (Dec 18, 2004)
I agree with Marcello but... I've never been much of a speller... will my comments still get deleted? :\
  icon
emmamommalag (Dec 18, 2004)
Okay, Marcello.. thanks.
  icon
mouthdecay (Dec 18, 2004)
:\ That's a lovely rule to enforce but what worries me is that there will be no more "." picture descriptions. Thank you Marcello, now we wont have to read comments from people who sound like blundering fools.
  icon
Zack (Dec 18, 2004)
Asking about exactly what will and will not be deleted is a fairly futile exercise. As Marcello said, this is a matter of common sense; there's no specific number of errors that will determine whether or not a comment is deleted.

It's worth noting that the more difficult it is to read what you wrote, the less likely anyone else is to read it.

Special note to those who occasionally write lengthy comments: Please use paragraphs. They make things so much easier.
  icon
Gigandas (Dec 18, 2004)
Well, if anyone is really worried about their spelling, you could always run the troublesome words by a spell check in Word or type it into www.dictionary.com to find how to correctly spell the word.It only takes a few seconds and I'm sure you'll start to learn the correct spelling to words as you go on doing this.Just a bit of advice...
  icon
sincity (Dec 18, 2004)
I always have my dictionary next to me. As I age , I find That sometimes I forget how to spell even simple words sometime. :}
  icon
Kilala (Dec 18, 2004)
I just suck at spelling period. < see period! XD Anyways is this a new rule because of what happened in that forum?
  icon
Gigandas (Dec 18, 2004)
Kilala-And that's why I made that suggestion ^^;.
  icon
marcello (Dec 18, 2004)
There's no shame in learning how to spell words. It's not really an excuse. As for stuff like "dont." If you're so allergic to including the apostrophe, feel free to use the full, "do not."

Keep in mind this site is moderated by actual people and not computers, so as Zack pointed out, arguing over how anal the rule will be enforced is fruitless.
  icon
Kilala (Dec 18, 2004)
Oh! I was thinking of something else... sorry.
  icon
DinoFlorist (Dec 18, 2004)
I used to be on the side of those younger "artists" who made pretty lame pictures and might spell things wrong, but back then it was not so prevelant. Some of the bad spelling I can deal with, but holy crap. It's not just how you type it, but what you say. It makes me sick sometimes to think of what the world is going to be like in 10 years when illiterate, inarticulate masses come into the workforce scribbling unintelligble symbols that they'll probably claim is 'anime.' Speaking of which, I have noticed that there are like 10 new pages of drawings a day. This is great! Except for that 70% is crappy and I feel worse about having seen it.

Nightmare (Dec 18, 2004)
What about run-sentences? I see many people using them..it gets sickening to look at.
  icon
squee (Dec 18, 2004)
You mean run-on sentences?? Oh he horror of those. Yes, it is scary to look at. I can't read a essay a friend wrote or even the comments. I always think, "Holy crap! They need to go back to 4th grade!". Many people don't know grammar.
  icon
Nightmare (Dec 18, 2004)
Or proper sentence structure...
  icon
squee (Dec 18, 2004)
Ah, yes. Proper sentence structure. I'm surprised I'm not an English teacher. It wouldn't be fair for the younger 2drawers though. I've seen a 9 year old. Some of the people really don't know good grammar. I guess you could at least check out their age first, then delete like your life depended on it. There's some people in this world that have the intellect and some who don't. I know someone who had good grammar even in 4th grade. >> <<; I'm not saying it's me... uh... I'll shut up.
  icon
Nightmare (Dec 18, 2004)
A poor excuse for sentence structure is saying you're 21, whan you clearly write like a 8 year old.
  icon
squee (Dec 18, 2004)
True. I have a step brother who is expelled from every school in the area he lives him. What a nut case. Anyway. I agree. Saying you're 21 and having bad grammar is unacceptable. So delete their bad grammar.
  icon
NekoShahal (Dec 18, 2004)
Finally. I am one of those people who hate reading comments and descriptions with misspelled words [on purpose]. It's annoying, but sometimes the misspelled words are on accident. Thank you for making this a rule. =D This is one main reason I don't go to Yahoo! chat anymore. ^_^
  icon

"Leave the chat lingo for the chatrooms" enough said.

  icon

Hey Cello, that should be the rule. Chat lingo is for the Chatrooms, not the art.

Xod, good choice of art. Did you have an english ale yet Marcello? :}
  icon
UnWanted (edited Dec 19, 2004)
Whhhaaatttt!? That's just not right... oh well.. guess it will kinda clean up the crack-pot comment look..... but still... it's so fast and easy. :"(

bakuraiscool and me007: It's, "otherwise, comments, complaints, etc." "that doesn't make sense." and it's not that hard to depict the more simple types of idiocracy languange known as "Noobish." It just takes a little bit of common sense and word replacement. Lazy.

Btw... what about capitols? capitols are very time consuming :"P
  icon
squee (Dec 19, 2004)
Capitols. Yes, time consuming but if you know how to press the shift key, it's no effort.
  icon
Zack (Dec 19, 2004)
Those who fail to capitalize correctly will be shot on sight and have a contract taken out for the rest of their family.

As stated before, we won't answer nitpicky questions. Not seriously, at least.

Capitals not capitols.
  icon
p3ndragon (Dec 19, 2004)
I agree with Nightmare.
Seriously, Derrick...
Are you really 21?
On another note, though, I am glad this rule was put in place, especially with this sudden influx of new users. A couple months ago, over the period of two months, only a handful of people joined (I think). Now, however, there have been around 5 times the number or something. Am I right?
Anyways, you're doing a swell job Marcello.
  icon
Kilala (Dec 19, 2004)
I'm not! There is lots of rules now! When I first got here, more free to do stuff... but now I feel presured with all these rules! GRRRR!
  icon
xwindflyer (Dec 19, 2004)
What, now we have to put up with grammer police too. You must be one of those types who must force youe ideals on everyone. You are not comfortable unless things go the way you think they should. Let people be what ther are. Who are you to correct everyone?
  icon
TaCO (edited Dec 21, 2004)
He's the boss.
  icon
Zack (Dec 19, 2004)
You seem to have it out for the administration of this site, Dave. Let people be who they are? I don't think that horrendous grammar and horrible spelling are part of a person's personality. I think it's a combination of laziness and ignorance. And we aren't correcting everyone. We aren't correcting anyone. We're just deleting posts of particularly offensive grammar and spelling.

This is already a popular rule. People appreciate how irritating poorly typed comments are.

As for Marcello not being comfortable unless things go the way he thinks they should, well yeah, seems like that would be obvious. It's his website. He pays for most of it. If he sees something he doesn't like happening on it, shouldn't he be free to take measures to prevent it?
  icon
Gigandas (Dec 19, 2004)
Nightmare-I think accurate sentence structure is pushing the limit and one example why I say that is because not everyone who comes here is from America where English is their first language.Second, it varies on just where you are in grammar that you've covered in school and is not just a matter of simple laziness and ignorance as Zack has pointed out.It can fluctuate just as how well someone may or may not do in a math course depending on their learning speed. It'd be discriminating to those who are not to other people's standards.Spelling on the other hand, there are many easy ways to check that like simply grabbing a dictionary and looking it up.Grammar is a little more difficult to look up and fix.

While we're at it, let's try using proper verb tense. We do not lay on a bench; we lie on it. "Lay" is the past tense of "lie" and "lain" is the past perfect. "Lay," as a transitive verb means to put or place. The past tense of "lay" is "laid" and so is the past perfect.

I have no problem with anything on this site! I was just I was alittle surprised about the new rule that's all...
  icon
ky (Dec 28, 2004)
This is the stupidest thing in the damn world, and you should be shot for placing this rule into effect. (only joking on the last part, har har)

Just because people cannot type as well as you or other sorts of perfectionists\elitists does not mean they should be penalised for it. It's like saying because someone is lazy they are a bad person. It's shallow, it's uncalled for, and it's ricidulous. And perhaps, let's say, they do know proper grammar and\or spelling, and are just too uncaring to type well on the internet. Should they be punished? It's very unjust for you to do that, and whether it bothers you, it doesn't matter. Nothing wrong is happening, and they are hurting no one. Simply because it irks you is no grounds to have to punish them. To punish them, as I've said, is like calling them bad people. And the only bad people I know on this site are the ones who wreck it. And, for some reason, I'm convinced people with poor grammar\apathy do not wreck this site.

My two cents.
  icon
Childlike_Vampire (edited Dec 29, 2004)
In my opinion, this rule is based on common sense. It isn't to punish people for being bad at english, but just to make it easier to read. I don't think the mods feel like going through every single comment and deleting everything that's possibly offensive, it's more to have an excuse to get rid of the comments that idiots just throw out there uncaringly.

It IS annoying and it IS hard to read. I rarely use proper english on this site, but I'm not worried about this rule because I know nothing I type is going to get deleted. My comments are easy to read and mostly relative. I have common sense, and it's stupid to get upset over this. To me it's just the same thing as the text abuse rule, only more definitive and obvious so nobody can nitpick it.

This is a rule nobody should even care about, they should just be like I did and shrug and move on with life at 2draw. I don't even know what made me decide to read through this forum again, lol.
And besides, getting a comment deleted isn't even a freakin' punishment, what do you lose, a point? Dear god, not a point. O_o
  icon
concannon (edited Dec 29, 2004)
Ky, it's mostly that we don't want people talking like this: omygod i think this is reali gud cuz its prety but its kinda mising sum detals

Like whoa. 'Cause buddy, that is damn hard to read. Punctuation is your friend. Without puncutation, the entire meaning of a sentence can change. Capitalization is also important, because without it how are we to tell a proper noun from a regular noun, unless it be something obvious such as a person's name?

If English is your first language, it's not too much to ask from you to have you type things out fully. In fact, it's kind of ironic how the users on this site who have English as a second language also have some of the best grammer. Xodiak and zep, I know.

Also, the users who tend to have grammer difficulty are the young ones. Teenagers, and a few younger. Those are the users that should be typing things out properly, if only to benefit their school careers. Typing everything in shorthand all the time certainly wouldn't benefit their essays and tests in any way I can think of.

And Child is right, just one point. So it's as if the comment never happened; you get one point for posting a comment, and one point subtracted for getting a comment deleted. There are no additional negative points going on here.
  icon
Nightmare (Dec 29, 2004)
I whole hearthedly agree with you, VV. The 'sea of dots' and 'lol' should stay in the chatrooms. The whole *sea of dots* gets reeeally annoying and is kinda immature, and I know alot of people like to use it. But honestly, take it else where. Like the PM's or the chatroom. <:)
  icon

I don't see why we need these new rules but hey i'll start typing right. (hope i didn't forget any commas)
  icon
Kilala (Dec 31, 2004)
I think you should use things like 'lol' if it has a bad word in it like 'wtf'... and a sea of dots immature? I my opinion sometimes it can be but come on it's all for fun. If most of us like to do that how come we can't? I mean, just because some people don't like it gets banned? In my point of view it isn't fair to the people who like to do it...
  icon
p3ndragon (Dec 31, 2004)
Although it's the internet, I think that websites such as 2Draw should try to keep everything as civilized as possible. "lol," "wtf," and other internet doohickeys should be acceptable because they are so commonplace. Lines such as "I r teh 1337z" should be fine as long as it's in a joking manner. Nobody wants 10 year olds running amock spewing their garbage and whatnot.
Many people support going to war. Does that make it right?
It would be nice if strict user regiments were created and enforced.

Come on... really, I don't know what the big deal is. It's not like it's going to kill someone if a person doesn't spell or say something right. I agree with P3ndragon. For some people 'lol' and 'wtf' is a force of habbit. Ok... I'm stupied so I'm not the best speller. Should I be shoot? Like I said, I see where it's coming from but this rule sucks. X3

marcello (Jan 2, 2005)
it's not like it's going to kill someone to spell or say something right. =P Even if it takes you twice as long to comment, it's worth it in the long run, to yourself, and everyone who has to read your comment.

no one said lol and wtf were not allowed. they're acronyms used for a reason. 'u,' '2,' 'c,' etc. are not acronyms.

This is the way I see it: this is Marcello's website so he can enforce anything he damn well pleases, and if we want to keep coming back to this website he has so generously kept up for us, we've got to abide by his rules.

Solvera (edited Jan 4, 2005)
because grammar has so much to do with drawing... -_- just lighten up a bit man this is the net and a doodle/drawing page, no need to get so worked up about it. It's not that i won't abide by your rules. This is your website so you can do what you wish. I just hope you don't go to far with this.

marcello (Jan 4, 2005)
people are obviously missing the point here...

It's okay Cello, Ignorant masses will always be a part of any community :D
we're all ignorant masses, yay.
  icon
Solvera (Jan 4, 2005)
lol no you just came off really harshly with your original statement. "complete moron" is offensive to many people who have spelling problems or have had such problems before. This problem is compounded by the fact that spelling seems beside the point on a website devoted to art in the digital medium as opposed to a written work. Thanks for your consideration.
  icon
marcello (Jan 4, 2005)
it looks like you have no real problem writing correctly, so what are you worried about?
  icon
Solvera (edited Jan 4, 2005)
merely that you need not pick on people for their lack there of. As stated above you were being rude. A simiple "New Rule!" notice would have been fine. No need to get offensive.
  icon
marcello (Jan 4, 2005)
calling people complete morons for being complete morons is far from rude. ;)
  icon
Solvera (Jan 4, 2005)
lol true but calling people with lack of education in the matter or possible disablities complete morons is.
  icon
marcello (Jan 4, 2005)
well people with lack of education are complete morons. people with disabilities. well, no one has complained about their comments being deleted because they have a disability. so I'm not going to worry about that. =P
  icon
Solvera (Jan 4, 2005)
It seems you are missing the point now however this conversation is of course going no where fast. I'm going to go back to important stuff such as drawing. We can debate this agian if the need arises.

Thank God, Marcello finally people will learn proper english, and use it instead of learning it in english and completely disregarding it. It just looks idiotic to say something along the lines of "hay joo how Bs u, Wil I C U l8r M/B 4 oh fiv okeey okeey C/a latehrs," finally people will say things like " Hey, how are you? Will I see you later, maybe four or five, okay. I'll see you later." now people wasn't that simple. I was also wondering if "emotes" count as improper english, things like (-:, and XD you know... well yeah nice ruling!

One last question...Can we use the word ain't?
  icon
DinoFlorist (Jan 12, 2005)
I cannot see why there are calls to end this thread! This thread is hilarious!

Watch as people complain about the new rule, all the while spelling things in ways that are so obviously wrong it makes one wonder how they had the ability to read Marcello's post in the first place. Maybe that's why people are missing the point; they can't read it!

Has Marcello, or 2draw, ever enforced rules so zealously that a tiny honest mistake would be penalized? Not since I have been here. Many people have had drawings deleted or moved at one point, but I have never seen it done unjustly, even if its not always consistant. The point is, don't worry about it.

Word doesn't make you write better, it actually makes you worse.
  icon
inatyrb (Jan 17, 2005)
It corrects your mistakes instead of you correcting your own mistakes. It doesn't teach you well, except I must say, it did help me learn to spell probably. I never knew how to spell that. But This thread is still neverending huh?

mind you I'm a foreigner I should be excused heehee

-shrugs- I never use word fix, really. And yes, correcting your own mistakes is better than a computer correcting your mistakes. This thread IS never ending! WHOOP.

method3 (Jan 18, 2005)
People who don't make an effort to type, spell, and write properly will start getting their comments deleted. Same goes for image descriptions.

Use common sense, if it makes your head hurt thinking about how you typed it then it probably makes a mod's head hurt for the same reason. 'nuff said.
