Not very long ago, my computer experienced a virus tBiuhat deleted the file that allows me to logon to my computer. Luckily, it was restored. But I was warned to be a bit more careful with the things I downloaded. Well, when I tried to use an applet, I was told I needed java installed in order for the applets to work. I went to the site and checked out their privacy policy. Turns out they track nearly everything on your computer, AND just give that information away to third party advertisers. Now I don't know what to do. If I install Java, I'll lose my privacy and most likely get another virus. But If I DON'T download java, I can't use any applets. What should I do?

Ok, I'm sorry, but I can't resist saying that you're an idiot. I mean, for getting a virus in the first place, but second, for completely not having a clue when it comes to privacy policies and common sense.

First off, I will assume you have a fraction of common sense and are getting java from http://www.java.com/, not Microsoft or some other questionable site. I will also assume you clicked "Privacy" that points to http://www.sun.com/privacy/ at the bottom of that site. That is a privacy policy for browsing the Java Website. Guess what, 2draw puts cookies on your computer and tracks 'nearly everything on your computer' as you put it. OMG, going to any website can do the same thing! The only way to be truly safe is to unplug your computer from any network, modem, or form of Internet/Intranet. Simple as that.

You actually can get viruses by simply using Internet Explorer, so I highly suggest switching to something secure like firefox. Installing Java is not going to take away any privacy you already don't have by simply using the Internet.

However, you are right to question whether one should download or install a program. You should use caution when installing any program, including Mozilla, Firefox, or Java Plugin. (I will go ahead and include the JTablet Plugin I wrote in that list.) It is really a matter of who you trust. I use Mozilla, Java, and numerous other free programs every day with no trouble. I have never once got a virus. Never.

So go ahead, if you want to draw on 2draw, go download the Java Plugin from http://www.java.com/.

Although I can't say I am too pleased with being called an idiot; I accept the fact that you are more intelligent than I am, and know best. I am trusting you in the fact that JAVA is indeed safe.

I sincerely thank you for your help.
