was 55 when, astride her horse, she watched the British Navy defeat the Spanish Armada. Cate Blanchett was in her 30's when she did the movie. This is really frustrating because every couple of minutes the drawing tools just stop working for about 10 seconds. I don't know if it's my computer or what but it sure makes drawing a pain in the butt. The real QE1 was swarthy with reddish hair and brown eyes, a hooked nose and thin lips.
Here's a link to the ref photo.

just wanted to draw something better for my avatar... My plan was to draw some beastman (from warhammer tabletop game) but even thought i had reference they all turned out horrible. none of the drawings were menacing enough! damn :(
so i tried to draw an orc instead.. but they too turned out crappy. double damn! :P
so i ended up drawing something simple in the end. ~30 min.

edit: aaah! it doesn't look as good in the small scale as i imagined it would look. The hair strands that fall in front of the face make the face look a bit funky when its reduced to the size of 48x48 or 24x24 pixels :(
its still a bit better than the last one, but i gotta make a new avatar someday soon :S

thanks guys. :D
Rat - you can actually see the blood in the small picture?! you must have a bigger screen than me or a smaller resolution cause when its reduced to 48x48 pixels, i can only barely see some red on his chin :(
firecracker - um no, hes no vampire, but if hes anything hes a male version of this character from this epic fantasy comic thats been plaguing my mind now for years to draw, but i've been too daunted (or lazy) to start a webcomic that looks like it would take a few hundred pages to finish.. and i would first have to learn how to draw environments. and clothes, im horrible at drawing clothes. the rest im sure i could fake.. but someday, i will do it!
davincipoppalag (Feb 8, 2010)
Creepy eyes.. nice
firecracker (Feb 8, 2010)
Well I hope you do that epic comic fantasy someday.......he would make a great character in a comic.....he's really cool looking......:)
TheCrusader (Aug 7, 2010)
Perhaps if his eyes were more lavender, he could be Drizzt from the R.A. Salvatore bookd.

Thank you everyone! No, no reference photo....this one was a vision. I miss drawing and hope to get more time to do so. Thank you again!

Futon frolic.
I tried refining the hatch shading a bit. Probably won't do much more with this. It was an exercise in trying to remember how to draw after not doing anything for a long time. I'm sure I shouldn't try a complicated pose without a ref--lotsa stuff off. Feels weird when you can't even manage to get your tablet angled correctly to draw diagonal lines. My drawing hand is retarded. At least I'm hoping it's my hand and not my brain. :-O

My arse.
Teapot (Apr 23, 2010)
I can't fathom why this isn't in the showcase. I love looking at all the colours in the grill and the rust. The theme from Bonnie and Clyde plays in my head every time I see this picture.
Bobstained (Apr 23, 2010)
I think alot more pictures should get into the showcase. And more people should have the authority to put them in, that way it covers a wider spectrum of different opinions.
Suntan (Apr 24, 2010)
Yep, there are more than a few that I thought would have been picked, this being one of them.

So, everyone seems to be doing a little copying from favored painters & illustrators so I thought I would throw in my 2 cent.

This is from Kay Nielsen. I really love all of his work. Especially for the East of the Sun and West of the Moon book. :)

Not done yet, and the lady needs some reworking of the torso and head, but better then nothing!

I bought all the illustrations from that book in card form about...erm...30 years ago. Still have them. Still love them. This is very, very pretty and has captured the feeling of his work.
Layne (Feb 27, 2010)
I am glad you like it. They republished the east of the sun and west of the moon about two(?) years ago in a really nice hardcover edition. :) I was so glad when i saw because while I had a book of his illustrations I really wanted to be able to read the stories that went along with all of his illustrations.
enjoydotcom (Feb 27, 2010)
Very attractive style, those soothing colors are great.

It would be a great contest, draw from your favorite artist. In his or her style.
mursku (Feb 27, 2010)
when i compare your piece with the original, the first thing that pops to my eyes is that the original looks like it was made with watercolors, while yours looks too smooth, there's hardly any texture.. i liked the texture you had going in the fifth version.
if you wanted to have texture like in the original painting, an easy (and quick!) way to do it, would be with a scatter brush (choose a high scatter count and you can maybe crank up the spacing too) on a separate layer. that way you can easily erase the eventual wayward dots from unwanted areas, and you can also play around with the blend mode and opacity (make it subtle)

..hmm, another thing that i noticed was that the original was much more sharper (darker and thinner lines).. i suck at line art so i'll not gonna try to give you any advice on that. You would only get worse if i tried to teach you line art :P
