Korean barbecue, or KBBQ Its roots go all the way back to the Koguryo Era of Korean history, to the nomadic Yemaek tribe, whose territory included the entire region of Korea and stretched as far as Manchuria. The Yemaek were always on the move, so they had lots of time to marinate their meals but also needed a quick way to cook their meats. This is why maekjeok was invented. "Maek" is a reference to the Yemaek tribe while "jeok" is the word for the skewers used to cook their meats on an open flame.
