-Anime is popular in Japan, as a Japanese, I also watched anime when I was a schoolboy. However, anime is considered childish (manga is not), so most Japanese adults will stop watching anime when they graduate from college. Maybe we are too busy with our job or looking for girlfriends. But, those grownups who continue to watch anime are called otaku. They are very nerdy, and live in their own fantasized world. Isn't that the point? Anime creates a fantasized world for young people, so they can escape their school pressure or homeworks. But adult watching anime is like they are still children and can not adjust to the fact of being a grown up. If you tell a Japanese woman (or any woman) you like anime, be ready to kiss her goodbye (unless she's an anime geek too). -

I thought the above was funny :)

People like anime for the pretty boys and the boobs. ;o TRU FAX.

Eh, it's just a hobby for some people. You have to be seriously creepy/antisocial to be considered otaku.

i'm not really that much into anime, i prefer manga instead (i'm a reading freak), but i do watch some from time to time. ignoring all the plastic looking and lolita-style, anime are just a normal films/series. there are some really good and serious productions, eg. made by Ghibli (i recommend them to everyone who likes fairy-tale like climate). i mean, if a film has a good scenario and/or makes you think, does it matter if it's animated?

no, it's not. there are horror, science-fiction, fantasy, c-punk and many other types, just as in live-actor films. and just to let you know - tha emoticon you used is actually based on anime-like face expression and is mostly used by anime fans... ;P

There is tons of crap anime. A lot of it is very melodramatic too, or reuses the same tired themes.

Some of it is just amazing though. I have found plots more complicated than most American cinema, and shows. At times it seems they even strive to make something aimed at (dare I say) an "intelligent audience". Some of the animation too... wow, knocks my socks off. Please don't base all anime by the likes of Naruto, Pokemon, Yugioh, etc. Granted those are aimed at kids. There is anime out there that is great.

Anyone seen, seeing Paprika?

I have seen some adult anime's that blew my socks off (this was before I knew about anime and the whole craze so when I saw the animation [it was about space with some cute captain saving this woman]) I didn't know what the hell I was watching and tried to find it but never did. Couldnt tell you what it was but it was my first introduction and slowly learned about anime (not knowing TMNT was made by the Japanese, nor Power Rangers, which I watched *blush*) or a lot of other popular shows, but I started to understand what anime was and tried to watch several shows (again must admit to watching and liking Sailor Moon, till it became un-watchable) but as Solve said the more I watched the more of the same old tired theme was used (and still is).

I think the only one that broke the mold and actually focused on intellegent writing and adult theme's, and one of the few that even non-anime people can get into, is Cowboy Bebop. It's smart, witty, funny at times (I mean ED... come on, her episodes are my favorite. The Mushroom episode? Huh, huh? Or her first intro.... or the one with the chess game? :) It's also serious, and the lead goes through quite an interesting arc. Some of the truly best are full length films (not Howling castle, the more rough around the edges ones) and though there hard to find, if I see one of those well made movies on the tube, I'll watch it.

But the generic stuff I tend to stay away from. They just don't appeal.

In all facts I do agrred with Broken-Lock, Solve and Sweetcell.........:O
Many people in this times do watch anime or reads manga "graphic novels" just for the sacke of preety boys or girls, I have known alot of friends in here my home town that they only see them for the main hot characters witch in fact that anoys me the most, girls goes for those girly guys that are more femenine than manly, and most guys just goes for the exsageration of perfect image girls........D:<
In this times people are just wackted out in their minds only for the perfect porn image in witch I have seen the most, I don't have problems about their opinion but hey its just to much.....DX
Thats why I just hate the same lame story line, same plots, same drama scene, ect....ect...ect............

But heres a thing on witch why I see anime or even read it, I do confes I do love watching anime, and read the novels, and heck I'm not a kid I'm a strait out young adult, I watch anime because for the story, just like I do when watching a movie or a normal american cartoon, but the thing I like is that anime has a beggining and an end, I don't want to spend all my life time seeing the same crap cartoons with out an ending, for once I'm an anti maincharacter lover, why well because they get to anoying and thats what most people will talk about instead of the actuall story, or whats about....D:>
I love good stories, so I'm so picky on what anime I want to see and the rest they just go to the dump, to tell you the truth theres about only four anime stories I do like"Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, Cowboy Bebop and Antique Backery witch is a manga"until today the rest are just too boring to me or just don't cut the line like this ones.......>:D
But yes I do love anime and I don't know I just do regarless to what many people have shown on why they like it, I adore anime and the novels, but is just being me......:]

This happens w/ every media, with everything if you want to put in that way.
Comparing what you like w/ anime and discussing it, is a good method to know new stuff.
BTW.: I´m watching kino no tabi =]

Hellz yeah broken lock, I hate seeing these anime henshins where like a five year old girl gets a 20 year olds body and they exploit the boobs, its really disgusting and they look fake. I like crazy hammer space anime like dead leaves, bobobo and flcl (hammer space is an anime that defies physics like a woman might think of a hammer and pull it out of nowhere to hit her husband on the head, ya know like all cartoony) I hate anime that shows way too much thinking, naruto is a good example but the people on that show are too pretty to say I hate it, anime anatomy was first inspired by the over exploited anatomy of betty boop and other old american cartoons with large heads big boobs giant eyes and little feet.

I love romance anime cause its so damn sweet ya know, and gives me good dreams, I hate hentai yaoi and yuri because it just goes over the top, shonen ai and shoujo ai are much cleaner and generally can have a better storyline. Mecha never really flips my switch its just so dull and boring like c'mon. I love animes that are complete comedies like shin-chan. Personally I hate american made animes cause american cartoons are great and I love them dearly but leave the anime to the japanese. I really liked magical girl anime for a while and Im a die heart fan of sailor venus and sailor mars but Im not one of those weirdos that has these LIFE SIZED MODELS OF THE SAILOR SCOUTS ZOMG!!! I really hate that whole fanatic collector stuff and those letcherous perverts that actually could get turned on by a fourteen year old cartoon girl thats just sad man >:O

Deathnote hate very pretty boys but well it doesnt really have an interesting storyline !spoiler alert! I mean a book that some pretty little self proclaimed god found taht he kills millions of people with and a hacker with neat hair and a cute expression on his face "omg man is like totally weird like they both dont know who either of them are and the first one to be discovered is dead, DUM DUM DUM!!" but I digress the detail is amazing and its one of the cleanest animes ever.

Paraoia agent was pretty good but seeing a dead pink puppy covered in blood kinda made me sad. Im a miyazaki fan too, I just love the fact that all his movies are really long and extremely well made. As for anime making people dress up like them in public, that creeps me out cause like most people that cosplay arent pretty enough to be who theyre dressed as. But anime is kickass and any real fan will have it on the tv in the hospital on their death bed.

There are sooo many anime styles and Ill try to remember all that I can okay, girly, boyish, magical girl, magical boy, pretty girl, pretty boy, harem, reverse harem, romance, hentai, yuri, yaoi, shonen ai, shoujo ai, hammerspace, mecha, space, action, fighting, swordmastah, comedy, horror, mystery, lolita, and oes based on video games like street fighter.
