FIRST STEP:
HAVE FUN! CHOOSE A BRUSH YOU LIKE AND PUT AS MANY COLORS ON THE CANVAS AS YOU'D LIKE. PLAY. PLAY. PLAY. I CAN'T EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN, SO HAVE FUN WITH IT. THE DIRECTION OF YOUR STROKES DON'T HAVE TO BE ANY 'ONE' WAY. BE CREATIVE! DOING THIS TO MUSIC YOU LIKE IS ESPECIALLY RECOMMENDED.

STEP TWO: CHOOSE YOUR BRUSH OF CHOICE AND CHANGE THE SETTING FROM NORMAL TO DIFFERENCE. HAVE THE ALIAS BOX CHECKED AND SMOOTHLY MOVE YOUR 'BRUSH' ACROSS THE CANVAS BACK AND FORTH IN ANY WAY THAT YOU'RE MOVED TO MOVE IT. IF YOU ALSO CHECK THE BLEND BOX WHILE DOING THIS, YOU'LL CREATE THE DARKER LOOK AS SHOWN ON THE BOTTOM. WITHOUT IT BEING X'D, YOU GET THE LIGHTER EFFECT. I ONLY USED THE BLUE COLOR FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES, BUT YOU ARE NOT LIMITED BY ONE COLOR IN THIS STEP. I WOULD SAY JUST PLAY LIKE THIS TILL YOU BEGIN TO SEE WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE, THEN STOP.

STEP 3: JUST CONTINUE ADDING COLORS/BLENDING OR NOT, CUTTING INTO OTHER SHADES, IT'S REALLY ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN MORE THAN ANYTHING. IF IT'S NOT FUN, YOU'RE NOT 'LOOSE' ENOUGH. LOOSEN UP! LOL. YOU CAN STOP HERE IF YOU'D LIKE, BUT NOW I LIKE TO TAKE IT TO THE NEXT STEP...FUN WITH OTHER TOOLS...LIKE SUBTRACTION, SATURATION, BLUR ETC.

STEP FOUR: OH MY GOSH THAT WAS FUN! LOL..THAT'S JUST USING THE SATURATION TOOL SET ON A MEDIUM GRAY COLOR. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO 'X' THE BLEND BOX OR NOT. YOUR CHOICE...OK..I'M GOING BACK IN THERE, THIS IS TOO MUCH FUN...SEE YOU IN A MINUTE.

STEP FIVE: OK IF YOU WANT TO, YOU CAN USE THE MULTIPLY TOOL, DODGE AND BURN TOOLS AS DEMONSTRATED HERE. BUT, I'M GOIN BACK IN AGAIN, CUZ YOU WANTED TO KNOW HOW TO MAKE SMOOTHE COLORS. I DIGRESS...

STEP SIX: TIME TO STOP. ALIEN LANDSCAPE CREATED. NOW YOU KNOW HOW. HAVE FUN! THE POSSIBILITIES ARE LIMITLESS!

I just made a comment on one of your older pieces, saying that I can't imagine how you do your stuff. And your latest piece is actually on that problem. Thank you! I have to try this out. But don't worry, I won't copy your art...I call that "being influenced" :D

Awesome!!! I was soooo going to ask you how you did this yesterday, you must have ESP. oO Thank you very much. I want to try this.

Oh CRAP! You did a tutorial like I asked? Donna, this is amazing and if I could I'd reach through the screen and hug you. I knew you used all the special tools I just didn't know how you did it. Honey, thanks for this, you know I gotta try now. Do wish we could have a fave folder, this would go right in. (((((Donna)))))

Btw, awesome picture, and I love the little added bubble on the left.

I'm happy you like this! I hope the tutorial makes sense, if anyone has any questions, feel free to memo me.

Here's my favorite example using this method for part of a picture: http://zoraw.cellosoft.com/data/8/86673/86673-v2.jpg

this is another example of the same technique: http://zoraw.cellosoft.com/data/8/83752/83752-v2.jpg
