This is Unico from the movie "Unico In the Island of Magic". I saw this movie when I was about 6 years old and I still love it to this day. It's such a unique movie, the story is so bizarre and the animation is trippy. I highly recommend you rent or buy this movie, it's awesome.

I really like this pic! the colors are awesome! I bet there were many layers for this pic!
enjoydotcom (edited Apr 7, 2007)
Omg, is he up for adoption? I shall be a good mommy, :D. Just loooove the pretty colors. And such neat clean lines. Are my eyes deceiving me, or is the right part of the background lighter than the left part?
Looked the original up on the internet, and this is even better!
lori (Apr 7, 2007)
really nice job with this, it's so nicely done and adorable.. somehow it doesn't seem right for you to post anything in beginner though. Me, yes. You, no.
Naima (edited Apr 7, 2007)
OMG, how cute! And wow - my eye is drawn to the laser precision of that light colored edge-line all around the figure... Yikes, the simplest seeming thing, but I can feel my hand cramping thinking about making it that neat. Always surprised by your versastility, Klox!
jaded_angel (edited Apr 7, 2007)
...i remember watching Bambi...i never heard of this movie i'll go and check it out....yes and your pic is insanely simple and perfect...is this the right one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=filIu2Saszs
pancakes_rock (Apr 7, 2007)
how cute i like the colors and the line art so smooth.
Kloxboy (Apr 7, 2007)
Thanks everyone. What's even cooler, Unico's horn glows and he can turn into a life-size pegasus.

jaded angel: That's the movie, it looks better on film obviously but you can see the whole movie there, pretty neat.

enjoydotcom: "Are my eyes deceiving me, or is the right part of the background lighter than the left part?" Yes, there is a light to dark gradient. :)
marcello (Apr 7, 2007)
looks like he drew it in illustrator. hence being so smooth...
Kloxboy (Apr 7, 2007)
Marcello: That it was sir, the lines anyway. I did the tappering and the coloring in Lascaux, obviously. :)
Sweetcell (Apr 7, 2007)
I never would have believed this was yours if I didn't see your name. It's so...... not like you. Cute though, never heard of it, but then I haven't heard of most anime out there. Now American cartoons, them I know well. I still don't understand how you can upload through fonts.
Kloxboy (Apr 7, 2007)
Sweetcell: You need a font creator. You make a new font with your font software, import a jpeg or gif (all black) to a letter, like say the letter 'F'. Now the letter F is your drawing when you type it for that specific font. Keep in mind, you merely get a rough drawing, this process is more for proportions and alignment, it won't allow you to just import your drawings, only a rough version of it. Even if you draw your work in Illustrator, you'll have to clean up the piece a bit and this is just for lineart, nothing else. Don't misunderstand this process, you actually have to know how to draw to do this and work, it's not some quick fix to making art.

I think people are turned off by the idea because they think it's "cheating" (and because they don't read my descriptions) but they don't understand it's not all that different than drawing directly in the applet, it just makes a couple things easier. And anyone who has a problem with this technique needs to lighten up, I don't want to listen to you be ignorant.
Sweetcell (Apr 7, 2007)
Ok, I think I understand what you mean. So if I did an outline of a cat, made a new font, and replaced the font with the jpeg of the cat I can upload the image?

Ok, I just confused myself. Nevermind.

It's a perdy dragon. 8)
fleeting_memory (Apr 7, 2007)
ooooooooooh good lord. So I went to watch it but apparently the Island of Magic is the SECOND one so of course I had to watch the first one first "fantastic adventures of Unico" I think my brain is leaking out my ears-I haven't watched a movie like that since that old school Swan Lake. Fun times. That is definitely him-nice job :)
Kloxboy (Apr 7, 2007)
Sweetcell: First off, he's not a dragon but thanks for the comment. His name is Unico, as in the first 5 letters of the word 'unicorn', that's not merely a coincidence because he is indeed a unicorn. ;)

Second; when making a new font, you have to make new letters, 26 of them (as well numbers, punctuation marks, etc.). Each time you make a new font, you get a blank table displaying each character/letter a font can have, you fill out the table with your own letters/characters you designed to complete the font. To do this, you select a letter from this table and import or paste whatever image/letter you wish to represent that letter when you type it (keeping in mind, the image must be all solid black or it won't work). So let's say I make a new font called "FuggleNuts", to start off, I import or paste a smiley face to represesnt the letter 'A' on the font table. So now, every time I type the letter 'A' using the "FuggleNuts" font, I get a smiley face instead of just the letter 'A'. You would continue that process for each letter, maybe a flower for the letter 'B' and a key for the letter 'C', and so on until you finish all the letters/character in the font.

And last, you could outline a cat for proportions or line art, I'm all for that, but also note you can import original drawings.
Sweetcell (Apr 7, 2007)
Ok, I think I have it (fugglenuts lol) So where does one find a font maker?

And I knew it was a unicorn, but my mind wus scrambled figuring this out. ;)
Kloxboy (Apr 7, 2007)
I own Font Creator. I've tried other font makers and so far, Font Creator has been the best. Which ever font creator you choose, make sure you get the free trial first to see if it fits your needs. I suggest you only buy font makers that let you try them for free first, otherwise you might end up buying a worse product than was advertised.
Roytje (Apr 8, 2007)
Cute! And I don't use that word often, so great job!
enjoydotcom (Apr 8, 2007)
I think I have a trial version of Font Creator, but I can't work with is good as you can.
The way you explained using your font trick, to me it isn't cheating. But maybe I think that because I'm still smitten with the little guy. :D
marcello (Apr 8, 2007)
it is a lot different from drawing directly in the applet, it requires software that a lot of people cannot afford. =P
Kloxboy (Apr 8, 2007)
Marcello: I highly doubt you have the statistics to back up your statement for my specific software when you said that. People buy used software all the time, just like used cars, they're more affordable and hardly outside the cost of a tank of gas.

Oh and just because it's expensive, doesn't make it any easier to use. I think it's safe to assume Illustrator isn't in every ones home because of it's specific function and it's difficulty to use, not just the price. oO
marcello (Apr 8, 2007)
in most cases, used software is illegal, many programs have non-transferable licenses if they've been opened/installed.

however, that's really tangential to a deeper point that goes against the grain of what 2draw is supposed to be. there is a reason you cannot paste or upload work on 2draw, the idea is that artistic skill aside, everyone is on the same playing field. different tools have different affordances. it is arguably akin to using a motorcycle in the tour de france. granted, 2draw isn't a competition, but at the very least I think it is fair to say that it is misleading people.

another way to look at it: would you like it if people could upload or paste in image files of any sort? I mean, I could easily add that option to 2draw.
Kloxboy (Apr 8, 2007)
You finally broke Marcello, I knew you didn't like this method. I've already explained this in past drawings why it's valid and it does come down to the user. I'm not explaining this again, especially not to you. :)
friend (Apr 8, 2007)
It looks devilishly evil.
marcello (Apr 8, 2007)
it doesn't really matter whether I like it or not, I could simply get rid of the custom font feature from lascaux, or make it detect special fonts.

I'm curious more on what people think on adding uploading/pasting to 2draw.
Kloxboy (Apr 8, 2007)
Marcello: I think you're more than curious, if your intentions had a scent, they'd smell like fresh dog shit.
steveandjoe (Aug 13, 2007)
Good good good! I loved that movie then and I love watching it on youtube to this day! It's fantastic to see someone appreciating something really really good:)
