Oh, as for the splinter you have to buck up, get some rubbing alchohol and a thin sharp needle, disenfect the needle, then dig in. It'll hurt, but better the pain of getting it out then risk infection. (((hugs))) and good luck.

Not sure if you have the splinter out of your finger yet. What sweet said works, but if your a bit squeemish, I sometimes try to suck it out, at the very least it somewhat losens it.
Paper cuts and splinters -> 2 of lifes littlest yet relatively most painful 'injuries'.
