Hm... I was thinking, if a light source like the sun were to hit a black umbrella, a shadow would be cast upon the object beneath it. However, if the light source was a strong and direct one like a spotlight, and it struck an opaque source like a red umbrella, would the umbrella then act as a light source? Or would there be like red shadows.. (if there is such a thing o_o;;?) Or .. like, if there were blue shadows and a red light source, would those intersecting points be purple shadows then?

I think there would be a red light source...as for purple shadows, I don't know for sure...

But I love the mysterious feel of this drawing...and the eye is so sexy, lol..

shadow colors aside I really like this! I agree-very mysterious.

I think you should go see some rock concerts or theatrical shows and see what those conditions you have described look like..colors in light do not react the same way that colors in pigments do..it's a fascinating subject. This is a great picture for this but she looks like she is trying to pick her nose through the scarf thing

It really depends, though likely (Unless it was a thick umbrella) it would start to act as a red light source. Generally, shadows are always the colour not used in the mix of light. Draw a colour triangle of pigments (Not RGB, but RYB) and then whatever colour the light the shadow will be the opposite. http://painting.about.com/od/colourtheory/a/shadows_Impress.htm is all about what colour shadows are, very simple. Also, for a quick experiment I used a red umbrella and shined a light on it, it casted red on the other side of it, acting like a light source. Coloured shadows are definitly possible, go in photoshop and take a picture in the day and at
sundown, Depending on the time of day shadows are blue, green or sometimes purple.

[EDIT]: Go here to, http://painting.about.com/od/colourtheory/ss/color_theory.htm it's a guide on colour theory simplified to be read in 10 minutes. It's great, it explains pretty well all you need to know.

Oh wow, thanks for the replies :D! And uber thanks willtremblay for the sites! I'm going to have to experiment more with this colour stuff. The whole idea of cast shadows vs. form shadows is rather confusing though :s..
Davinci: Ack yeah, I noticed the nose picking thing when I was submitting, and was hoping it was just me.. guess not lol! Now I can't stop staring at it o_o;;

the use of shadows and red/blue is really great~ i think if you used red (o even blue with more reflection of red) skintones more, it would've stood out even more~
