If you have not yet upgraded, you may want to! The new version of Java is faster and now fully compatible with the upcoming Windows Vista.

Get Java 6 here: www.java.com

Also, if you are using JTablet, you will need reinstall it after updating your Java (as you always will need to). If you are not using JTablet (and have a graphics tablet and Windows), you might want to check it out!

Get JTablet here: sketchstudio.cellosoft.com

Enjoy!

Is it worth buying Vista? I don't feel ready yet.
  icon
Nightmare (Jan 21, 2007)
lol

it seems Java 6 is not compatible with Win 2k.
  icon
HunterKiller_ (Jan 21, 2007)
Don't buy Vista.
  icon
marcello (Jan 22, 2007)
Why not?
  icon
Nightmare (Jan 22, 2007)
SUSE> Vista

seriously, the majority of the people who are getting vista just want it for the GUI.
  icon
marcello (Jan 22, 2007)
yep. but that's enough reason if you like windows.
  icon
davincipoppalag (Jan 22, 2007)
If it all works now..what's the point of updating.. usually screws things up when I've tried updates...is it just to be "with the latest edition"..I don't really understand why it's necessary..(and I'm not trying to be a wise-ass.. I just don't understand the need)
  icon
marcello (Jan 22, 2007)
I agree completely with that attitude. In my case, I have been using vista since June, and have a difficult time going back to XP. Vista is a lot faster (starts up in a fraction of the time), runs smoother, and has lots of little interface improvements that just make it all around nicer to work with.

Depending on what kind of upgrade deal you can get, it'll be worth it or not.
  icon
Nightmare (Jan 22, 2007)
You could also download a windows skinning app. or just install a visual style to get that GUI vista has.

  icon
marcello (Jan 22, 2007)
it has nothing to do with the visual style (although that looks good, too, and much better than any xp visual style imitation). it has to do with using the 3d card to accelerate everything ala os x or xgl. in short, xp is crummy when it comes to transparency, vista does it no sweat (and does diffused transparency).

in short, it's much more aesthetically pleasing than xp. installing hacked visual themes is also pretty annoying/something I don't want to waste my time doing.
  icon
Nightmare (Jan 22, 2007)
eh, I find win 2k does a better job handling transparency than xp myself.

Don't buy Vista.

Why not?

Because Microsoft made it.
  icon
HunterKiller_ (edited Jan 22, 2007)
installing hacked visual themes is also pretty annoying/something I don't want to waste my time doing.

Dude hasn't heard of UXtheme.dll.

The only real problems I have with Vista is that it's such a resource hog. You need a PC with the power of a decent gaming rig to run Vista, and it will bring that gaming rig down to an ordinary computer.
Secondly, I can't begin to imagine the headache and suffering trying to find Vista compatible drivers and other software. I have a hard enough time trying to track them down for XP64 bit.
  icon
marcello (Jan 22, 2007)
friend: I'm just comparing vista to xp, not vista to anything else. It is not worth it for me to switch from windows.

As far as powerful computer, I don't know, my computer is two years old and wasn't that expensive, hardly a gaming rig. But I haven't used a underpowered computer for comparison. Again, on the same computer it runs faster and smoother than XP, so not sure if your logic necessarily applies.

Actually, I've had things work (driver-wise) that never worked on XP. It finds drivers where there are none, somehow. So yea, no driver issues.

The reason you have trouble finding 64bit drivers is because they're 64bit. If the don't make a 64bit version of the drivers it doesn't matter what os you have.
  icon
friend (Jan 22, 2007)
I see what you mean. Hopefully it ain't too buggy eh?
  icon
HunterKiller_ (Jan 23, 2007)
I see what you mean. Hopefully it ain't too buggy eh?

I would wait a year at least for the bugs to be ironed out. By then the prices should have also dropped.

Fewer bugs/crashes on vista beta than xp pro sp2.

I've just installed Java 6 and Shi-Painter won't load. It just comes up with the 'install missing plug-in' window.

IE or Firefox? Tried uninstalling other versions of java?
  icon
HunterKiller_ (edited Feb 9, 2007)
EDIT: I read the instructions. The Java 6 plug-in isn't available yet for XP 64, which is what I'm using.

Firefox. I didn't have Java installed before installing version 6, 'cuz I've just reinstalled Windows.
Guess I'll just have to go back to 5.

Doesn't work in IE either. =\

I just got a new computer with windows vista already installed. I do like how it looks a lot better. Yay for customizing the colors and such, everything on my comp is pink and black haha. It's kickass. Anyways, I like vista but I really do hate internet explorer, which my computer came with. It's a lot slower on here now than it was when I used netscape. It takes forever to load certain pages on the net. Oh well, I still love it. It is by far better than windows ME (which is compatible with almost nothing).
  icon

I did get that one, but in the instructions it says that the X64 plug-in is not yet available, only the run time environment.

I'm having problems running Jtablet with 32-bit Windows Vista. I've been finding little things have changed causing lots of programs not to work anymore. ( looks like the programs try to reference a folder or spot that's been slightly removed from the regular branch).

Anyways >.<;; Jtablet won't work with my windows vista/java 6. I get two errors on the test between ie and firefox. Ie says Jtablet error: Tablet not available. Firefox Jtablet link error. And when I click on the executable java file I get : " Failed to load main-class manifest attribute from C/:program files/cellosoft/jtablet/jtablet.jar"

I've been looking around but haven't seen too much documentation on this. Jtablet seems to install successfully. I've also tried to do it as run as administrator with the installation.

Anyways if anyone has any tips I'd be very grateful. I've been searching for a little while now since I got vista. I almost want to go back to xp ;/
  icon
marcello (Mar 15, 2007)
Hrm, it does work with Vista (I'm using it). The tricky part is getting Vista drivers for your tablet (I'm using alpha drivers from Wacom).

The error you get from jtablet.jar is normal, it is not an executable.
  icon
Sonaa (Mar 15, 2007)
Wow o.o You are awsome! I didn't think I'd get a response for a long time. I'm using a wacom intuous2. It said it was Vista drivers? I notice that your other drawing program Lascaux works with the whole pressure senstivity and everything. Any hints on the wacom intuous2 driver for Vista - 32? I would be eternally grateful. I've really loved Jtablet <3 It changed the way I do art!
  icon
marcello (Mar 15, 2007)
Wait, it works in Lascaux but not in what?
  icon
Sonaa (Mar 15, 2007)
Doesn't work in any other java applete like shi-painter or the test for jtablet on cellosoft site. Also won't work on paintchat which uses the shi-painter code. So should I try to use an older tablet driver or something? I'd really love to use Jtablet like I used to be able to.
  icon
marcello (Mar 15, 2007)
There is no reason it should work on lascaux and not the other things. Are you sure it's actually working on Lascaux?

I assume you're referring to the pressure sensitivity and not just moving the mouse...
  icon
Sonaa (edited Mar 19, 2007)
Yah oddly it works on lascaux, both size and pressure sensitivity.
Yah the cursor moves, but no pressure sensitivity. Let me take some shots for ya.

Update: I tried different version of wacom drivers, along with various ways of installation ( ie compatiability with xp sp2, reinstalling jtablet at same & different installations, etc). I'm really baffled. Also wacom tablet works fine with programs like OC and photoshop, just not jtablet or/ certain java applets?

notebook99 (Mar 20, 2007)
Can you help me? I download Java, refresh, restart my computer, and yet I still can't draw on any programs provided here. I've looked around, tried different things, but nothing seems to work. It's been distressing me for a few days now, too. Please help me? Because it's frustrating for me not to be able to use these programs that I had been looking so foreword too. ;____;
I've downloaded Java Environmental 5, Update 11. I'm not a computer person, really, so some tech help would be greatly appreciated.
  icon
Sonaa (edited Mar 20, 2007)
Notebook are you using a tablet or just your mouse? Does the program come up or does it say you don't have java?
Also what os are you using ( windows xp? linux? macs?)

notebook99 (Mar 21, 2007)
Ohhh, wait, nevermind. Fixed it. *laughs*
Mmm? Tablet-but that wasn't the problem. I hadn't edited firefox to enable Java. Do'h! *smacks forehead* Thanks for the help, though. ^__^ *hugs*
  icon
Sonaa (edited Mar 28, 2007)
Woot:) I'm glad for ya!

Edit: Since I had problems thought I'd put the solution that worked finally. After reinstalling drivers of all different versions and such. I finally went back to the newest Vista drivers for my wacom intuos2 from the wacom site. I installed the old version .9.4 of jtablet and it finally worked. I almost fell out of chair! Thank God!

ZombieKun (Apr 6, 2007)
so is there any resolution to the vista/jtablet problem yet? aside from sonaa's luck? i've tried both .9.4 and .9.5 and can't get it to work. but i recall it working shortly when i first upgraded to vista... i'm running the java 6, vista drivers for an intuos2, and jtablet .9.5 right now. if there's any help with this i'd really appriciate it.. ;__;
  icon
marcello (Apr 6, 2007)
I'm not sure what the problem is. it works fine for me on vista with the vista drivers for intuos2. The 0.9.5 vs 0.9.4 I imagine is a fluke. If sonaa installs 0.9.5 it should still work. It's possible java 6 is having issues, but that's hard to say. What error does the test applet give you, zombie?

ZombieKun (Apr 6, 2007)
i don't get any errors with shipanter, it just won't open the sensitivity tabs. when i tried with lascaux, i got a huge error msg and screen capped it. i think too think its some kind of communication error between the tablet software and java. i just ungraded to java6.0 today though and it both was and then wasn't working before that. and now it certainly isn't working still. i wish i could provide a little more info :(. i do know that when i upgraded to vista, i installed my tablet, it worked for about 3 days, and then stopped registering, i reinstalled the tablet driver and it never glitched up again. i also don't think i ever tested jtablet after that point. (until now)

i did try uninstalling jtablet AND my tablet drivers, restarting, installing tablet drivers, restarting, installing jtablet, restarting. and that didn't work either.. =___=;;
i appreciate any help you can provide marcello. here's the errors i got with lascaux: http://www.techneko.com/art/java.jpg
  icon
marcello (Apr 6, 2007)
can you look at the details on the jtablet installation and see where it's installing stuff? and check that it's actually finding your Java installation correctly?
also, did you try the test applet sketchstudio site?

ZombieKun (edited Apr 7, 2007)
jtablet is installing into C:\Program Files\Cellosoft\JTablet. when i got to the cellosoft test area i get a "plugin v.: couldn't load" and "jtablet link error" i don't know how to check if its finding the java installation correctly, if you can tell me how i'll be sure to check.

EDIT ok, i checked the install details for jtablet, heres the info it gives me:
Output folder: C:\Windows\system32
Output folder: C:\Windows\java\trustlib\cello\tablet

and then a bunch of stuff like this (from java 1.4 to 1.6):
Found Java 2 Runtime Environment v1.6.0
Output folder: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\lib\ext
Extract: jtablet.jar

do you have jtablet.dll in system32?

If so, try deleting it and reinstalling jtablet...

(also, do you have wintab32.dll?)

ZombieKun (edited Apr 8, 2007)
i do have wintab34.dll
deleted jtablet.dll and then reinstalled and still no luck... :( gonna try removing jtablet completely and the dll file and then reinstall.

you were kidding about wintab34.dll right?

hahah yeah oops. wintab32... -__-
wintab32.dll vr 6.0.2.1
  icon
marcello (Apr 8, 2007)
ok, so I'm not sure what the exact problem is, but it sounds like you have a bunch of versions of java installed? if you run lascaux, what version does it say is being used in the info box? did you upgrade to vista from xp or is it a clean install?

I recommend going through and uninstalling all the other versions of java, and perhaps even reinstalling java 6 after that so it's the only version you have. then try reinstalling jtablet.

also on the jtablet installer, if you right click on the info, it should let you copy it so you can paste the actual lines.

ZombieKun (edited Apr 8, 2007)
yeah it does seem like i have a few different versions of java. can you point me in the direction to uninstalling them? should go through the control panel, and "add remove prog" etc? i ungraded to vista... so far this has been the biggest issue (knock on wood).
Lascaux says its running java 1.6.0 it says jtablet is uninitialized after i get all the other java copies uninstalled i'll post the install info for jtablet. thanks again for you help though. i know its hard troubleshooting without having access to the machine, and that there doesn't seem to be a direct cause of the problem.

EDIT uninstalled all my java clients, and jtablet, restarted, installed java 6 then jtablet, and STILL no luck.. ;______;

Does Jtablet work with Tablet PCs? I have an X60 which uses a Wacom designed active digitzer for it's screen and pen. I cannot, however to get Jtablet to work for the life of me. I've tried reinstalling java and jtablet then restarting and reinstalling 3 times, and i've put the jtablet.dll file in my firefox directory. but I still get the Jtablet Test v0.3 (plugin v.: couldn't load) Jtablet link error when trying to run the jtablet test.

What do I need to do to fix this? :( I'd really like to give oekaki shii a shot with my tablet, but it isn't looking too promising. Thanks in advance

if yes, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling jtablet?

My computer is not new and up enough to use Vista and Windows 7,I cannot use them until I get a new computer, which I am avoiding cause I do not want Vista; everyone tells me it has enough bugs in it to start a ladybug farm. Oh,yeah,my jtablet does not work here;and the new thing with it,which was supposed to update, does not make it work. So,the cute little chat thing does not work for me. However,I'm beginning to learn that the word "experimental "is synonimous with the word"avoid". When I see it in the future,I'll just click automatically to "avoid, ignore" and that will fix everything.
