The ancient greeks once thought that people saw because of a tiny fire within the eye, until someone pointed out that if it were true then people should see in the dark. Shadow monsters have to see in the dark, so their fires are definately there. They're also a bit like deep see fish. They need all the light they can get to find their way around.
