his pecs look kinda square and the space in between is a bit awkward. The outlining also takes away from the shape of the body and makes it look linear too. I really like the neck though. I always have trouble with the details on it.
Here is the ref by the way. Well you pointed it out...had a lot of trouble with his pecks, and because the painting felt not dimensional enough I added the lines to leave a better graphical impression.
Thanks for productive criticisms
Good practice, your interpretation is certainly unique. The face and hand are good, but the shoulders aren’t tilted like the statue which is probably why you had problems rendering the torso area. Although, it does intensify his overall demeanor which seems to convey to me a much more serious and heroic man! Just slap a big red S and cape on him and DONE! Haha.
I always wondered what he was holding in that hand. I think the chest and face is great. It's his neck that seems a little long. It's great though. He looks like he's frowning. Maybe because he has nothing to cover up with? :)
I was going to ask in my last message if anyone thought his head and hands looked a smidge oversized... and now I just read this: "oversized hands and face to emphasize impending act of giant-slaying" (Source: http://faculty.evansville.edu/rl29/art105/f03/art105-4.html)
Sweetcell: It's his slingshot over his shoulder and rock grasped in his other hand by his hip.
MrPaul, thanks for pointing that out...I din#t really noticed that before.
Well it was just intended to be very quick anatomy practice mixed with some graphical stuff to make it watchable in this board...but these tips do actually help....so don't stop ^^
And yeah I noticed the big head and hands too...but they do fit very well (original).
This is the issue with using paintings and sculptures as reference, they are never 100% correct. And this is why I hate my anatomy-book ...it's full of lousy handmade drawings(or doodles), and it tell you to draw people in real life. But this is hard, because I'm not going to find a naked person, willing to pose for me a few hours a day, that easily.
I like the way it's kind of in a "poster edge" style and the palette is really pleasing. I don't think everything has to be anatomically correct to be pleasing (actually, a little "morphing" of that in a work like this makes it more interesting sometimes)
