Here's an idea that is very different but seems like a lot of fun.
Week 5: Draw your own original 'Far Side' comic. Anyone who can remember 'The Far Side' by Gary Larsen is probably of the opinion that it is among the best comic strips of all time. In my own personal opinion, it definitley is, hands down. The challenge here is to make a comic pane with caption (usually a single pane, but that is not required) to make a hilarious comic. Do not steal the jokes off of other comic strips (does not apply to adapting jokes)! I will attempt to check them all out when judging. Rules: Funniest comic wins as long as the graphics arent disgusting. Gary Larsen had a great style, and I would say is a very good artist which helped convey the humor. You can draw however you want, but its still an intermediate quality board. I know that making one of these can be quite challenging but don't make it too hard on yourself. Have fun and be creative. This contest will run from 10/7/05 10pm PST through 10/16/05 12pm PST |

I think overall, Watterson was a better artist and comic. While Far Side had a bunch of gags, Calvin and Hobbes actually held some clever sequences and was much more thought-provoking.
Still, Far Side is quite spiff, even if it doesn't take the "hands down" title. I made a parody strip of it once, heh. Good luck all. |

Can you submit more than one image for a contest?

Calvin and Hobbes is pretty good overall, but it never had anything close to as funny as the far side. The far side, in one pane, one image, could be an icon forever more. Everybody I'm sure has seen the Midvale School for the Gifted comic and countless others. Calvin and Hobbes is a good story but you have to spend time with the characters. The Far Side will jump out and grab you immediatley no matter your familiarity with the comics. They also encompass a much wider scope because it is not limited to characters.
I have many Calvin and Hobbes comic collections, and I do like them, but I don't go back to them as much. What I really hate about Calvin and Hobbes is Spaceman Spiff! He can go to hell, its boring when calvin dreams. P.S. you can submit more than one image if they are good. |
