You certainly are. I'm not sure if you're doing it because you know or just because it's what looks right to you, but visually warm colors such as reds and yellows tend to come forward in space while cool colors like blues and purples will fall back toward the the background. Using mostly warm colors in the character and setting him on a neutral grey background does a lot to help place him as the center of focus and also visually makes him just look like he's closer to us than the other character, as does his size. Using the dark grey on his shirt also gives a good sense of it being behind and underneath the green jacket he's wearing. Nice Job.
