What I find easier, and quicker, is sketching out the basic shape of the object first then building it up from there. Rather than doing it little by little.

maybe it would be easier, I don't know.. and I gotta get that shape down next time around, to make sure it's in place right... but man, this one's a bitch.. cube shaped gems and lead round nodules

I'm having a very hard time with the orange gemstones, getting their shape right.. I have to go back and redo some, then it will look more like a mineral/gemstone I think. Glad you like Blackbird.
