wow, jpeg compression did not treat this picture well.
Suntan (Jan 16, 2011)
what's that mean?
backmagicwoman (Jan 16, 2011)
I'm curious what that means, too.
Axil62 (edited Jan 16, 2011)
jpeg is an acronym for the most common image file type. I can't rememner what the actual letters stand for... something about photographers. Anyway, in my own crude attempt, and quite possibly wrong, it just means that when a picture is turned into an image on a computer the colors are converted into pixels (tiny little colored dots very close together). The smaller the pixels, the more pixels there are in a given space in the screen, the finer the image. Compression happens when the computer uses less pixels to make the image file size smaller. Less pixels for the same dimensions as the original image means that the pixels need to be bigger to fill it all in. Pixels are square. The larger the squares of color are, the rougher the image is (not so smooth, especially around the edges and even more especially if the background color contrasts with the images perimeter pixels for obvious reasons). So when marcello said that jpeg compression did not treat this image well he's basically saying that the process of turning the original image into an image that a computer can display made the image look a little rough. One would make the jpeg (image) have less (or bigger) pixels to make the file size of the image smaller (or take up less computer resources to display it). It's not something the app did. The ref had crappy compression. When I drew this, I included spots in the hat and pipe that look like crappy compression. What I'm not clear on is if marcello is referring to the ref as having crappy compression or if my depiction of crappy compression in this draw makes him think that the app. caused crappy compression. Feel free to correct me on whatever I may have fucked up in my simple explaination.

Taking the risk of sounding completely confusing:...I know what jpeg is, when I first read marcello's comment it made me thing of how you can upload a photo sometimes and due to constrictions it has to be compressed, thus damaging the appearance of it..but if I had taken time to think about it, I would have realized because I already know, that 2draw doesn't have an upload feature..so I get what he means now, but I don't see it, which I blame on an incredibly tiny screen...but if it's so, can it not be cleaned up to look clear and clean, seeing as how it's not an uploaded compressed image?..

If one were so inclined, yes.

Electric, crank, twist or sand paper type?
Flubbles (Jan 16, 2011)
You can choose, but I like the old school twist ones you work manually.
