How did you stop liking it?
  icon
lori (Jan 1, 2011)
I don't know. I just don't derive any pleasure from it anymore.

I dont think it helps that you've convinced yourself you cant draw anymore, so everytime you draw you've always got a negative attitude towards it.

Yeah I know, I'm very negative about alot of things lately, not just drawing.

I hated drawing for a long time because I didn't want to make something that wasn't what I wanted it to be, so I didn't make anything at all. But now it's fun because I have a lot of old art supplies of all sorts and lots of paper, so it's less of a waste to play with them than it is to not use them at all. So I get paint, a bottle of ink, some brushes, a lot of water, and an unused sketchpad and just make whatever random thing on each page without much care for what it becomes. It eventually becomes something like a landscape painting though. It doesn't matter if the paper is too thin for that much water, or if acrylic and ink aren't normally mixed. The act of brushing dark black ink onto paper, mixed and overlaid with gold and silver acrylic, is in of itself enjoyable. It's not just the perfecting of a final product that can be enjoyed. Recently I got a can of black and a can of white house paint from the hardware store and I was thinking that I have this one big roll of canvas in my closet that's just been sitting in storage for years but maybe I can be like jackson pollock or something but instead of making a crazy spatter field of paint and calling it "a stroll in the park (while on drugs)" I'll be like a chinese artist and paint jagged mountains with waterfalls. Sometimes I make a really thick black line and I'm like "this line looks kind of tasty" and then I make it even thicker and darker. Also most of the time if I'm using watercolor I like to use a non-watercolor brush, like the princeton 6300 series of synthetic oil/acrylic brushes because pulling the stiffness of those bristles across the paper is a lot more enjoyable than some limp soft bristled brush. I think that mostly it's fun to see and to be the cause of something to change, like when you light a campfire and then you can see the fire burning though things and the wood turning black into coal and then it turns white a little later. So with art I think it's more fun to watch paper or canvas be covered in paint than to slowly sit there perfecting each detail.

I looked back at your old stuff a few minutes ago..last I looked, I knew you were talented, ...maybe go take a look for yourself if you haven't lately. Some wonderful art there. It might be inspiring to just watch it a few times. :)
Sometimes I get a dry spell, and I can't do anything to satisfy myself. It's frustrating...so when that happens I just go to paper or clay. I love to throw pots. You used to talk about the other things that you made. Maybe do something else creative till you feel like enjoying drawing again. ....what tanuki just wrote sounds fun. Recently I bought a cheap canvas and a cheap brush and I found it to be satisfying to drag that stiff brush across the canvas, too. It makes a great noise and sounds productive.
Major funks are not fun. I'm fighting one, too. Happy New Year, lori. :)

When I was in my 20's and working for the phone company, there was this hot little thing in the office that offered herself to me if I could quit for 30 days.

I was very fortunate to walk away unscathed today..I went to clean out the swimming pool filters and unwittingly disturbed a very large and viscious family of Hobo Spiders who had taken up residence..I am absolutely terrified of spiders and the biggest one I saw today was easily 2 inches long..looked like a friggin' crab...blugh!!

@Lori..maybe you should get some help quitting smoking and not try to go it alone.

lori (Jan 9, 2011)
