forumsnewsPoll: Web Site Hosting

Now that everyone seems to have settled into the new server, the issue of supporting it comes up. Donations are all very fine and well, but since no one makes any donations (not that I blame them), this isn't a very reliable means of maintaining the server.

In addition to donations, now that we're on a dedicated server, it makes sense to host some websites. So instead of donating some random sum every now and then, you could pay a smaller fee on a regular basis and not only help support 2draw, but get your own web site.

The question then arises over how much and for what. I'd just like to get a general idea on prices before I setup the site. Because this is real small-time webhosting, my goal is to host around 10-15 people, and the price would be 5-20 USD a month, most likely with a couple price plans. If you're interested (and there's no obligation), post a comment, or memo me on the prices you'd like to see/could afford.

Well, here's to hoping this post reels in some people to host.

I personally, as I've said, would like to host, and would be willing t'pay up to $20, mostly 'cause I think it's a worthy cause. (...did I spell that right?) Can't start right away, but I'll get back to you on it.

... *starts working on a website* The main problem that I see with this is that there are only about 30+ dedicated users and... well... Yeah.

Note me as interested. I've sort of been wanting to get a host for a while, so... opportunity, and such. I'd get Marcello's 1337 tech support skills, right? I'll pay anything reasonable, and anything between the said $5-20 dollars or a little more is fine with me. I make a ridiculous amount of money babysitting, anyway. ~__~ Might as well use it to support something I care about.

Would hostees need to register a redirect domain name somewhere else, or would that be included?

Count me down as well. I'd like to see how this turns out, seeing as I don't get any hits on my other website... ¬_¬;; Plus, I can always go back to washing cars.

Let me reiterate that I'm curious how much. I made up a mock page with specs and prices and whatnot and I came up with two plans of $10 and $15/m. Now I could make a $5/m one, but then obviously I'd need more people.

I could definitely pull off $15/m. So once again, count me in.

I'm not sure. Personally, I use a check card. can be used as a credit or debit card but uses your checking account.
Anyway, the plan is to use paypal to handle the transactions. If you don't trust them, I can understand, and I'm open to suggestions for alternatives, but I've had not probs with paypal myself. You don't need a credit card to use paypal, you can link 'em into your bank account and tranfer money directly (both ways). Tis what I did before I was 18.
(You can also send them a check, I think, not sure.)

I can officially support 2draw in full, in terms of cash money, but since you bring up the hosting thing, I can probably go all out $20 a month. Is this still in the works, or are the agreements/disk space/bandwidth worked out already? I'd like to get something up asap.

As far as I know, Paypal is by far the most secure and widely used online payment system. Having it hooked directly into your account is kinda scary for most people, but as long as you're not completely careless it's your best bet for doing online transactions, and the only way you'll be able to do it if you're under 18, and don't have credit/debit cards. Now if you don't have a bank account either, you're screwed.

For people without bank accounts, I will accept shoes with money in them if they are clean and delivered in person.

As earlier, I made up a full site about hosting and whatnot. I'm already hosting a few sites to test out the systems and whatnot, and everything seems alright. The only thing I haven't got working at the moment is e-mail, but I'll eventually get that setup as well.

But ya, I'm not sure what I could put in a $20/m account, but I could additionally do custom plans for people who want such.

I understand why sending you things directly would be a bad idea, but some people really want to contribute and haven't anything to use PayPal for. I haven't got any sort of cards, I've got checks. Lots and lots of checks and travellers checks. And this is prime area to show how much I love 2Draw. But I cannot because of PayPal and lack of credit\debit cards!

you could provide customised web design for $20/m accounts?

marcello (edited Nov 19, 2003)
my webdesign rates are a bit high.

OK, so here is what I made up:
http://hosting.cellosoft.net/

C&C welcome, I'm also open for bargaining and custom plans. If you think something should be changed on the features/specs, feel free to post here.

Okay, I've got a few questions...

1) If I get hosted, would I have to build the site myself, or would it resemble a design like cellosoft.com?
2) It says no adult/pornographic sites, but adult artwork is allowed, if it's your own. So that means no actual photos and movies, but you can upload your own adult pictures you made yourself?
3) I don't understand a lot of the pretty anagrams scattered about the explanation. Is that bad?

Finally could you humor us with your webdesign rates? :D

1) ya, you would have to build it yourself, unless you can find some free template-based site builder I can install on the server.
2) yea, pretty much. I don't want to be hosting porn sites, basically.
3) not really, most likely if you don't know them, you won't need them. I don't know what most of them stand for, but I can explain them.
DNS: basically what makes domains work, you need DNS to have whatever.com
PHP: a scripting/programming language to make interactive/dynamic sites (2draw was made in php, for example)
CGI-Perl: another older programming language
SSH, SCP, FTP: those are all described on the site

My rates? $50/hr and up. I prefer a per-project flat fee, if there's enough description for a quote.
