Dr.Moony (Jul 5, 2010)
Hey guys.

I want to practice my drawing skills on a daily basis, but I lack the dedication and focus to actually pull through. So I figured it would be easier and more fun if some people joined in.
My idea:
Each day everyone posts something they drew/painted/sculpted(/etc) that day - the focus being on improving skills, not making art necessarily ;)
First round could be limited to one week, to see how things work out.

Anyone interested?

Here are my sketches for today:

All of my refs are in there. I tried rotate my subjects and draw from memory at times.

@lori:
I think it loosens up your hand to say the least. Btw, sculptures are also welcome :)

day 2
Said this before somewhere, but it's weird how much I draw without really having a clue...

@HiroDaZero
Self portrait by chance?

poooop
Ha, nice ren and stimpy toons, Dr.Moony.
Suntan: Me toooo!
HiroDaZero: Ohh, very nice stuff you've got there at DA.

I could use those hands as a tute, Moosh..good looking stuff.
  icon
Dr.Moony (edited Jul 8, 2010)
mega pooop
I'm trying to pin down which drawing subject is best to improve my perception of proportions. I guess sport cars are pretty good, since I care for the subject and sucked really hard drawing one.
The problem is that with most subjects my drawing ends up being satisfying to me although the proportions aren't really all that correct. Which makes it hard to focus on accuracy.
...Sketched the portrait last. It felt relaxing compared to drawing the Lamborghini.

Feels good to draw every day. :)

@Mo0oOöosh
Oh hands are a great subject too.
What's that at the top left?
  icon
Moosh (edited Jul 8, 2010)
today's Some Loomis and figures from fineart.sk
I'm going to try some to do some more dynamic poses and whatnot tomorrow.
Try to get out of my comfort zone... Maybe do some perspective drawings. D:

Moony: It's a bird. I found the pic on link. There's some good stuff on there.
Cars are a challenge. Those are lookin good though.
  icon
HiroDaZero (edited Jul 8, 2010)
Drawing
the one on the left is an old idea, and no ref used except for the suit, but I found out I can't draw it even with a ref -.-

And yea it's a self portrait, and thanks Moosh :D

Day 4
...just practicing observation

@Moosh
Wow that thread has some really weird stuff. Thx :D
..I like the chest region of the 3 guys at the top left. I most often don't get that part right.

@HiroDaZero
You draw pretty good without refs
  icon
Flubbles (Jul 9, 2010)
I'm liking this thread, I'd like to get involved but I dont really have any appetite for drawing right now... and plus I'm quite busy aswell.

Another one
no ref again, but too tired to draw a full page x) the perspective is distorted on purpose. I couldn't really draw the mask well. :/

What a great thread! You are all so talented!

I am still learning and only begun practicing life drawing last year. I have not done any lessons (would like to though) but instead I go to these life drawing session nights in the city on Mondays at a Pub. BYO materials and yeah, few hours to draw. :)

@Black_Bird
Are these from a bar session?
  icon
Flubbles (Jul 11, 2010)
I always founds bikes difficult to draw, I used to automatically draw the tyres circular at what ever angle the bike was at. But I found out with practice they are more oval in appearance, but obviously it differs with the angle of the bike.

1 and 2 Some Bridgman, life drawings, and imagination poo.

Black Bird: That sounds neat. I wish there was something like that where I live.

Dr.Moony: I always have a hard time with bikes as well. They always end up really long. :/ The proportions on yours are looking good.
  icon
Black_Bird (Jul 11, 2010)
@ Dr. Moony: Yep.

@ Moosh: It is pretty neat. I travel an hour though to get there since it is within the cbd of Sydney.

Day 7
black and white mania...

@Flubbles
I always thought your username was Flubbes until we did our collab. So there is another trickery of perception....kind of..not really :D
My idea of someone who can draw or paint is, that they can easily look past visual illusions(apart from these moving things). And bikes are a big buffet of those illusions.

@Moosh
If you look closely(or not just glimpse :D ) at my bike then it's actually pretty messed up.
I didn't start with the details yesterday so to prevent major mistakes. But still I had to warp everything all the time to make it fit. Then there were those empty spaces and I just scribbled some stuff in there....or spaces were missing. The usual mess...

Also so many sketches. I'm proud of you Moosh :P
I read about Frank Frazetta that he got a book on anatomy once and then returned it the next day because he copied everything in one night. But maybe he was just making stuff up. Who knows.

just some cruddy photocopies today. i'm going to do something from imagination tomorrow. don't want to get stuck using photos as crutches.

@padmooks and shults- Yep, fuck it. Do what you want. People who can draw from imagination and still have it look awesome intimidate the crap out of me. Originality trumps copying photos any day. Well, to me at least. :] Like the poindexter sketch up there of padmooks'. Great stuff there.
  icon

Day 11
Tried to build that one guy out of boxes, but my concentration was on vacation.

@shults
You should be intimidated at what might happen if you don't join.

@padmooks
That poindexter guy reminds me of Gabe Newell...coincidence?

@Moosh
Yeah, in most cases doing a lot of photocopies doesn't result in one being able to draw from imagination.

Day 12
Haven't been drawing on the computer for ages. It's weird how much faster my hand starts to hurt when I use the tablet. Kinda sucks.
Had a look at a drawing I made of a Ferrari in 2002 and it's not that much worse compared to what I draw now. Kinda sucks, too.
I'll try out a different exercise method tomorrow.

@padmooks The resemblance is so striking yet insulting

Do you do alot of graffiti moony? , I noticed some in the top left hand corner of your sketches yesterday.
  icon
Dr.Moony (edited Aug 3, 2010)
@Flubbles
I draw really amateur*graffiti* stuff occasionally. The only time I actually went out spraying my piece ended up looking really really bad so I stick with paper/digital.
In graffiti and some cartoons I like how the shapes feel so dynamic and how even complex structures are held together in such visually pleasing ways. I like to think that I have at least some of that in my style and try to extend on that.
  icon
padmooks (Aug 3, 2010)
have you ever tried stencils? making your own ect.?
  icon
Dr.Moony (edited Aug 4, 2010)
Nope, though it might be easier to make something interesting that way. I think I'd do a lot more of that stuff if I still had contact to these guys who were into all of that. Generally I need more exchange.

...running late with my sketches today. Can't decide between two things(reading book or drawing) so as usual end up doing neither of them for hours.

  icon

Roytje, I liked the brown shadows, as you did them on an oekaki somewhere, more than the black shadows here. There was a good combination of brown and light blue/turquoise there if I remember right.

@Flubbles- What about body parts? only one body part on each entry.
  icon
Flubbles (Aug 12, 2010)
What body part would you draw? 8==o
  icon
shults (Aug 12, 2010)
You'd have to wait for the contest, but if it was draw your own body part contest, hmm.. that's somethin else, I think I'd draw my left foot.
  icon
Flubbles (Aug 12, 2010)
Whats wrong with your right foot?
  icon

We talked about it here http://2draw.net/view/116291/. The left one has a birth mark.

That just makes it more special, so you should wnat to draw that instead.
  icon

yes, that's why I said I want to draw it.

Day 33
Day 34
Day 35
I'll continue to post batches, rather than daily. Felt a bit like spamming.
As you can see I've been doing a lot of 2 minute sketches and focused on one face in particular. Getting faster would be nice.

@Moosh Thanks. Nice drawings and haha at that gorilla ogling his female companion. Did you have "Aha" moments when doing these sketches?
