trying out Lascaux Sketch...
drawing with chibipaint is much more enjoyable, but chibi doesn't have the animation feature :/

what i like in Lascaux Sketch:
- it has the magic wand tool for selecting stuff
- it has animations
- it has a HSL color palette (a big problem i have with shi-painter, is that i must select colors by sliding the RGB sliders :(
and what i don't like:
- the line tool produces stray lines over the screen (and some of the artifacts are permanent)
- if you try to pick a color, and on the layer that is currently selected that pixel happens to be transparent, it changes your brush to the eraser tool instead.. its very annoying when im trying to paint on a layer above. i basically have to paint on one layer all the time... :(
- you cannot assign pressure sensitivity to opacity, you can assign it to spacing and that helps a little, but its not the same :(
- this might just be me not knowing how to use the program. But while i was painting this, my brush would frequently stop making any marks. sometimes i could draw inside a rectangular area, but there wasn't the marching ants to indicate you have selected something like when i use the select tool. i tried ctrl-z but that didn't help, but ctrl-d did enable me to draw again. weird.. :/

oh noes! wheres the animation playback? D:

..i'll need to use Oekaki Shi-Painter to have animations? :(
davincipoppalag (Mar 1, 2010)
lascaux has no animation either..
vlad.the.hamster (Mar 1, 2010)
hrm... Lascaux is the one I'm most comfortable with. I find Chibi the most difficult. But then I paint with a mouse on a single layer so none of the other issues really bother me. I mostly really love playing with textures with it, though. (the I and D sliders on the bottom left) ;)

Btw, there is a color palette window you can select in Shi-painter. It's hidden in the menu somewhere, in the one that's like, text/texture/color or something like that. I haven't used Shi in ages though. And yes, Lascaux does have a problem with randomly stopping painting. For me it happens every time I move stuff around with the select/move. :\

Anyway, the stuff you do in Chibi definitely has richer and smoother colors, but I'm sure if you get used to Lascaux you'll do some crazy things with it.
backmagicwoman (Mar 1, 2010)
It's the color&mask tab in shi-painter that lets you have the color palette...
vlad.the.hamster (Mar 1, 2010)
thanks BMW, like I said it's been ages since I've used Shi. :D
backmagicwoman (Mar 1, 2010)
No problem..:D...it's the only one Iever use..
mursku (edited Mar 1, 2010)
thanks, i was beginning to think i imagined the color palette in shi-painter, when i used it years ago.. i'll try shi-painter next :D i want some animations!

edit: also, in shi-painter, is it possible to save the palette locations?
davincipoppalag (Mar 1, 2010)
well I dunno about that but if you keep it in floating mode you can leave the palettes on the screen
vlad.the.hamster (edited Mar 1, 2010)
hrm... I don't think you can save palette locations, but a thing I remember being pretty nifty is if you right click the brush size palette you can combine brushes. I always liked combining watercolor with epen for one thing, or using watercolor with the pen instead of the soft airbrush. :P
lynnandcharlie (Mar 1, 2010)
I have found that the animation feature now only works for the advanced board
backmagicwoman (Mar 1, 2010)
I have a notebook that I always have to write down the actual number sets to the colors I am using to be able to get those colors back for continuing a picture. the watercolor 2 with the pen is my favorite ..
Teapot (Mar 1, 2010)
Doesn't right clicking on the color get it back for you? It does for me. In some versions of shi there is a feature called 'the keep' that does just that, keeps your saved palette. I don't know if the version on this site has it because I can't get shi to work for me at all on here.
mursku (edited Mar 1, 2010)
teapot - yeah it does, but if there isnt any of the color im lookin in the selected layer but in the layer underneath, i still have to select the layer below, before i can select that color..
like if i want to repaint an arm in a different position, in chibi i would just make a new layer where i blocked out the old arm from view and on top of that layer i would paint the new arm.
in lascaux i have to also copy all the colors i used in the arm to the new layer or to the swatches palette before i could continue.. soo annoying! :P
..

anyways, i just joined artgrounds.com and tried painting with it.. its pretty cool.. way better than opencanvas 1.1 when it comes to paint chatting.. here's my first try :D

vlad.the.hamster (Mar 1, 2010)
really? in lascaux right clicking any layer gets the color back, I just have to change back to the brush instead of the eraser to paint again if I hit a transparent pixel.

backmagicwoman - you really choose your colors by typing in the numbers? o_O isn't that really slow? Also colors are relative, so for example; a gray color could appear to be yellow depending on what colors surround it. so for me its more intuitive to mix the colors on the canvas.. that's why i never save my colors in the (swatches) palette.
vlad - when i right click on a transparent pixel, its really annoying that my brush changes into the eraser tool, but its not a deal breaker for me.. what is a deal breaker is the pressure sensitivity when it comes to transparency/spacing.* If i have it selected i will have to have to have transparency and flow settings set to 255, and it still looks pretty faint. on chibi i can have the transparency around 100 when im using the pen and around 150-255 when im using the airbrush and it will lay more paint to the canvas than i can with lascaux..
when i was painting this i had to often take the pressure sensitivity off, and setting transparency at around 120-150. sure, i can make some pretty decent pictures without pressure sensitivity, but it also takes more time to draw that way :(
..now the another deal breaker; not being able to pick colors from the overall image, but only from the layer that is currently being selected. that is a big problem for me as i tend to pick colors from the canvas all the time... if people cant understand the huge problem i have with that.. well people have different methods off working and that slows me down 10-20% :( ..at least in all the other drawing programs it works like i like it :P

*it says transparency in the wiki, but on the canvas if i have that selected and i press lightly it looks as if only the spacing is being affected :/

[edit:] ouch :( ..that took like an hour to write.. i should just shut up and draw instead ;)
[edit:] and that last edit message took like 12 minutes! o_O
backmagicwoman (edited Mar 2, 2010)
No, I don't type in the numbers....I use the color mask to find colors I like and then when I am done I write the numbers down to those colors in case I want that same color again on another drawing...and then , if that time comes, I just use the sliders to create the numbers for the color I want....everyone has their own way of doing things and that's what makes everyone unique..If everyone drew the same and colored the same, then what would be the point...my method works just fine for me.
TumblingUpwards (Mar 2, 2010)
An interesting tidbit of information Mursku and BMW, if I ever get another chance to draw on this site then maybe I can figure out what you are talking about, lol.
backmagicwoman (edited Mar 2, 2010)
Why can't you draw here now Tumbling?
marcello (Mar 2, 2010)
..now the another deal breaker; not being able to pick colors from the overall image, but only from the layer that is currently being selected. <------- actually, this is not correct, it does pick colors from the overall image, not the current layer. it will switch to eraser, if the particular layer is transparent at that point, but the color is the overall. you can hit the 'A' key to switch back to the brush
vlad.the.hamster (Mar 2, 2010)
I also constantly pick colors from the canvas as I work, but I admit I have no idea how pressure sensitivity works in Lascaux, so no, I don't really understand. :p Anyway, if Lascaux bothers you that much just use Chibi, the way I like Lascaux and don't bother with the other apps unless I'm bored.

It's rather interesting to read about how other people work, though.
