Imperfect
(Oct 9, 2011)
Used myself as a reference.
Black_Bird (Oct 20, 2011)
This work speaks to something inside of me. There is something craving/possessed, almost sexual with the way the mouth is parted and the hand clawing against the side of the face. I really like the way the hand is done!
Teapot (Oct 20, 2011)
It is a powerful piece. I find it disturbing but I'm still not sure why. I agree that there seems to be something sexual about it. I think it's the blindfold and the title that give me that impression. I go back and forth between seeing the hand and the 'red' (blood? raspberry jelly?) as sensual/savoring to seeing it as clawing/fear/insanity. Then I think...is it about a person who is refusing to see something base (violence? greed?) or unwanted in their own nature? Regardless, it's great to be able to produce a piece that draws the viewer in and invites them to give the image an interpretation. Congrats.

Cuuute!
Imperfect (Nov 18, 2011)
A late thanks, but better now than never. Thanks for giving my drawing so much thought, BlackBird and Teapot. It's great to hear your interpretations. I had something in mind, but I like leaving it open to the viewer. :) |

from a picture of chinese artist ai wei wei with his artwork, a room full of one hundred million porcelain sunflower seeds.
itchymonkey (May 21, 2011)
some context..from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ai_Weiwei In October 2010, Sunflower Seeds was installed at the Tate Modern Turbine Hall, London. The work consists of one hundred million porcelain "seeds," each individually hand-painted in the town of Jingdezhen by 1,600 Chinese artisans, and scattered over a large area of the exhibition hall.[33] The artist was keen for visitors to walk across and roll in the work to experience and contemplate the essence of his comment on mass consumption, Chinese industry, famine and collective work. However, on 16 October, Tate Modern stopped people from walking on the exhibit due to health liability concerns over the porcelain dust.[34] In February 2011, a 220-pound (100 kg) pile from Sunflower Seeds sold for $559,394 (well above its high estimate of $195,000) at Sotheby's in London.[35]He is currently under arrest by chinese authorities for alleged 'tax evasion' .

He's in Beijing... Everything is China :0)

so, some reason this fabulous piece of reality is not in showcase? everything else detailed, and fantastically tightly rendered and licked,is in showcase. Besides, it's great.

Flubbles (May 9, 2011)
I've done it a few times myself, if you dont do the drawing in one go though you have to remember the exact time to pause it for next time.
Axil62 (May 9, 2011)
or you can pause the video, do a screen print, paste it in whatever paint perogram you may have, crop whatever part you want to use as the ref and save it. Then it'll be there whenever you want to come back to it.
Teapot (May 10, 2011)

dorothyblueeyes (Mar 19, 2011)
Frankly,I think itchy's is better than the Picasso. (My opinion.) Itchy's work was far harder to do,trickier, and took more detail, patience, than the Picasso. All the work of Itchy's is more delicate, subtle, and that was never a trait that Picasso could do.He was just a big, bold BULL. I think it's easier to make sweeping, bold statements; but the subtle, tricky hard stuff of depicting reality, without making it too stiff, is very demanding. Excellent, Itchy.
itchymonkey (Mar 23, 2011)
well thanks, you are too kind.

this bulged my eyes out :) I love it.

being a successful artist is just as much about being a good salesman as being a good artist. you have to understand the works in the context of the times, how they are presented, and how they are received. monetary worth is arbirtrary, anyway. why do people pay thousands of dollars for some t-shirt that a rock star wore? if I were to tell you I had a painting by pablo picasso in my museum, you'd be far more interested in visiting than if I said I had some schmuck you've never heard of. that's worth money. |
