Hi :)
I can see an old man looking down too! wait.. did you draw him on purpose, like he really is in heaven?!
You have great color combination here roy, as always. :)
But-I find the lines on the right disturbing, They kind of take me out of the story I could have built around this piece. maybe it was intended, don't know.. but I liked the piece better without them, like in the previous version.

edit- Im with that lady, even if it took him 40 years, it would be much better at 40 years and an hour!
gerbear (Jun 24, 2009)
In my opinion, compositionally, this piece is brilliant. You have two completely different pictures here, the left side all simple and monochromatic with just warm colors and large simple shapes and the right side is full of action, warm and cool colors, blurred and sharp lines, smaller shapes, etc etc. The two meet in the middle at the center of the volcano and my gaze is caught there, just as it should be. The part i like best are the vertical lines on the left, without them the left side would not be strong enough to balance the seething wildness on the right. They also keep the birds from becoming too much of a distraction. Simply wonderful.

I have been a fan of your work for quite a few yrs even tho I do not comment.

Sticking up for my pal axil, he did ask you for a reference photo and you made up some excuse about your'e sister borrowing your'e camera so you couldn't give him one right away.

Just clearing this one out of the studio too. The book I drew it for has been published and I was happy with the way it was used inside. The 'photoshopper' cropped different portions of the drawing to use as headers on each chapter page and at the end of the book was the whole drawing itself. Turned out nice and glad I have a copy!!

nice picture can't afford therapy, I live in Oregon; it's normal to be mentally off here. nice. (did you know mental illness is described as "not being in the behavior rules of the society"? leaves the door wide open.) Like that movie, "Never Let Me Go."
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Apr 3, 2011)
I've been meaning to comment on this since I saw it some time after you first posted it, didn't do it just then and since have been too lazy to go looking for it when I was here, which isn't often anymore. Just now as it came up in the Showcase thumbnail strip I realized if I didn't do it now, I might never. You know I've always hated you because I'm so jealous of your talent, and loved you because you're so very real, which is rare. (and because you always inspired me to strive to do better)
This, I believe, is one of your best paintings, because as a self-portrait I see in that expression the Staci I think I've come to know and love/hate here. ;) Along with being absolutely perfect realism, you've done the impossible "capture the expression" thing... something that almost NEVER happens in a portrait. There's depth in those eyes, something fascinating behind them. Some people see that in the Mona Lisa and say that's why it's so upheld. (One major difference there is that I think she's ugly and you're beautiful, so... ONEUP on that one for sure... hah)
Teapot (Jun 23, 2012)
I've looked at this a lot of times and been blown away every time. I just now realized what I like about it most, the way you slightly exaggerated the things a camera does when the shot is a little overexposed and the flash is causing it. How the light shows the details in the skin in a way normal vision would never pick up on. And the corona of color around the iris. And the way the hues of the skin tones are uniformly off. It's a great painting of a 'bad' photograph. That and the killer cupid's bow mouth.
staci (Jun 23, 2012)
yes! you totally get it. this is a HORRIBLE picture, horrible. Bags, blotchy skin and all. if I had a zit that day I would have drawn it in as well. thanks!

Wine spills in my blood,
and your blood spills in my soul
You have no control
Dead Angels speak to me sometimes
Giving me advice that I should hear
You have what I'm looking for
Because you're close,
Because you're near
Wine spills in my blood,
Blood spills in my mouth
You are what I'm looking for
You are just pretend
You are what I'm looking for

Very nice draw......I like how you got that chalky effect in this draw. Next time I use lascaux, I'll have to check out that feature, and see if I can do a chalky effect too. Very nice picture....I like that little bird. Her arms and legs seem to be a little on the thin side, but she still looks great. :)
ChalkDust (Apr 3, 2009)
The face is really nice and I like the muted colours; Great work!

Great movie. Well done Tony.. I had a chance to ride on that very boat here one year. The guy that owns it usually keeps it in Key Largo, but he brought it here a couple of years back and was mooring it in Westbrook in hope of getting Katherine Hepburn to come down from Old Saybrook so he could take photos of her on it. She had declined is invitations for years..and never accepted this one either,. While it was there you could buy a ride on it. Very cool
