mursku (Feb 16, 2010)
i was thinking that i might learn more from copying some great paintings instead of fotos.
For my first one, i chose one of my favorite artists, Josh Kirby, to copy from. He was a really great artist, but its a bit difficult to find a good painting from him to copy, as he tended to do those really detailed paintings (especially on the Discworld books)
for reference i chose one of his simpler paintings: http://andokai.blog.cz/0608/josh-kirby

Oh this looks great with your style superimposed over it. I think 'copying' another great artist's work can be a wonderful learning experience. It's a good exercise in making yourself really look carefully at details. Unless you're Flubbles I think you always find your own style is evident even though the subject matter is the same as the original. I've 'copied' a few Frazettas. It's fun.

Very fine, indeed, and I hate that chibi hasn't any animation. I want to watch you work.
enjoydotcom (Feb 16, 2010)
So happy you joined! Love this very much...
mursku (Feb 16, 2010)
suntan - yeah, animations would be nice, but Lascaux and Chibi are the only ones whose UI i can stand, and in Lascaux i don't know how to turn off the pressure sensitivity when it comes to brush size :(
...so i have just been using chibi

I think this is very cool..and I think you would do very well recreating some of Chris Achilleos' work as well...

Now this is the kind of art that I really love to look at. This is awesome.....I luv fantasy art. I wish that I could become a "fantasy" artist someday.......but "woe is me".....I don't think it's ever gonna happen...."LOL"!! This is a great draw!!! I hope you'll do more fantasy art.......:)
Flubbles (Feb 16, 2010)
I dont think it's gonna happen either, your'e not a spring chicken anymore and you've already started going senile. It's nice to have a dream though, however unlikely it is.
mursku (Feb 16, 2010)
backmagicwoman - thanks :D
i tried to find some good art for copying from Achilleos, but couldn't find any :( sure, he is a great artist, but when i choose a piece to copy, i try to select based on what i can learn from it, and i think i could learn more from different artists. Like from Frazetta i can learn composition; from Bisley i can learn to paint those great textures and energetic characters; from Corben i can learn to render more 3D'ish; from spoogedemon i can learn to paint more natural lighting, textures and to simplify my forms.. and so on. i want to get better fast :)
firecracker - thanks :)
Flubbes - you meanie! :P
firecracker (edited Feb 16, 2010)
I know it's just a dream of mine "flubadub".....but wouldn't you just "shit", if when I kick the bucket....that my "epitaph" would read..."Here lies firecracker....one of the great fantasy artists of all time"....."LOLZZZZZ"!!!! :P:P:P one more thing I want to say.....flubadub.....maybe I'm not quite as senile as you want to think I am.....hahaaa!! :P
lori (Feb 16, 2010)
Yeah "flubadub"! Maybe firecracker says some things just to get you all jacked up so she can watch you make an ass of yourself and get a good laugh! "lolzzzzz"! :) I love you firecracker, and I think you ARE a good fantasy artist. You need to draw again soon.
This pic and all of yours so far mursku are really great. You're very talented.
firecracker (Feb 17, 2010)
Thanks "Lori"......I love all your artwork too.... Yeah......I get a kick out of sparring with "flubadub".....it "makes my day" so to speak. I seriously would love to be a fantasy artist.....but I know that's never gonna happen.....I have so much to learn yet about drawing.....I can't even get my draws to have the "painterly look" that I want to accomplish....but I enjoy looking at everyone's artwork here, and I hope to keep practicing and see what happens. I love these draws that mursku is doing.....he really is very talented......:)
lori (Feb 17, 2010)
do you use the airbrush alot? I used to do that.. then my pics got more painterly for a while when I didn't use the airbrush anymore.. but instead just turned down the opacity and flow to about 100 or maybe more sometimes... and just used occasional blend... try it out if ya want. I'm talking about using lascaux, I forget which applet is your fav.
mursku (Feb 17, 2010)
lori - i use a hard round brush with the opacity set to pressure pressure sensitivity for almost everything. when i start doing doing details or hair, i also set the size to pressure sensitivity. i use the airbrush only for blending and when i want a bloom effect, but i tend to use it sparingly. i also use the scatter brush and the blur brush, a bit.
firecracker (Feb 17, 2010)
Lori.....I don't draw in lascaux......I use chibi most all the time, and no......I rarely use the airbrush.....I always use the pen for just about everything. Do you use the watercolor tool at all? I rarely use that. I'll try doing what you suggest, and turn down the opacity and flow to about 100 or more......thanks for your help Lori. "mursku"....do you use a tablet or a mouse? I don't have a tablet.....I only draw with my mouse. I guess I can't set any pressure sensitivity using a mouse. I hope someday to get a wacom intuos tablet......
Flubbles (Feb 17, 2010)
I dont get jacked up, me and firecracker just like making fun of each other, so keep your'e nosey beak out and sort out your'e grey pubes.
dorothyblueeyes (Feb 19, 2010)
Yeah,I like chibi myself, except my computer guy put the new java on my computer, and now I can't use chibi or lauscaux,so I gotta new computer guy.Yes,Frazetta would be proud. ---but as for not being good enough,to be professional, any of you,do not worry about it.I've known professionals who just floated around on macho or ego,and weren't that good, they just knew how to get published.there are thousands and thousands of fantastic, great artists, who never become professional,or make money at it. the people on here are just as good as professionals, anyhow.

uuuh.... doing the details is so tedious :(

[Edit:] I just found out that i need to finish my unfinished paintings before i can start any new paintings, soo.. im gonna mark this as finished! ..well its almost finished, it just need some of that tedious detailing to be done to it :P
mursku (Feb 27, 2010)
drawn in 1 hour 20 min
did some more detailing..
elly (Feb 27, 2010)
all this detail and you don't have the patience to sit and do hair/fur??!!! Lies!!!! LOL! This really rocks, dude!! All your stuff does!
mursku (Feb 27, 2010)
elly - hehe :D im not lying, doing details is sooo boring :(
also doing details takes like two thirds of the time of the whole painting. ..i would rather leave all my pictures half finished! and just do details in few strategic places... hmm.. I know! I'll have to start doing the depth of field effect in all my paintings, so i'll have an excuse to leave out the details. its a great idea isn't it! :P
Zero_Lemons (Feb 27, 2010)
man oh man do i love the rendering you did for this XD
firecracker (Feb 27, 2010)
This is just so perfect and professional looking.....it just boggles my mind.....you are just so talented.....your artwork is amazing.....:)
