here is a poem I wrote that goes with this drawing:
The Vigil

Tall sails took him far away
To a bitter land of war
Where the bravest shed their blood
Some returning nevermore.

Many months have come and gone
Still she watches o'er the sea
For any sign of his return
As her tears fall silently.

Clinging to her faith she stands
As darkness creeps upon the day
She lights the lantern once again
So he might see and find his way.

1st: Górecki's music bonds with this piece pretty well, like a scene out of a dramatic movie or an opera. Having the figure centered and isolated with her back turned invites the viewer to dream up their own, personal narrative (one that for me, is indeed, sorrowful). The high contrast and deep shadows also help to illustrate the mood. The accompanying poem is very poignant and emotional, while it didn't effect the judging, it certainly fits the piece well, nicely done Bette.
